-Why on Earth would we want to rival A.Net?! They can do their thing, we'll do ours.
Still not a half bad idea though. Too unoriginal, IMO.

-I and many of us already have websites. I know for myself, having one is hard enough :D

-And the point in rivalling a.net would be...? There are already other 'rivals' such as jetphotos.net, and they do perfectly well. And do you have any idea how much it'd cost to host such a large database?

-Agreed, a silly idea, we already have a perfectly good forum, im getting sick of all these threads with 'ideas' clogging up the forum personally.

-I dnt mean have a forum, I mean lets a fully blown website with database, why would it cost us money? If you think owning a website is hard then lets join together and make something good. If we pulled together and shared the workload it wouldn't be hard and let me rephrase myself, lets make our own thing that won't cost us a penny, a.net costs money to access the good stuff.

I think you fail to realise the cost assosciated with hosting a high graphics website. You will obviously need a large hard disk. Well, that's a small expense. You will also need a lot of bandwidth, this is where it starts to get painful, you also need a computer that can handle a lot of work (downloads) at the same time.... auch.
Not to mention the fact you have to write the upload script, the search engine, the screeners script etc. It took me a full day to get the layout of my site working exactly as I wanted too, and it it a very very simple site.
What's wrong with airliners, jetphotos or planepictures? If those sites have to strict standards you can always upload to myaviation or indeed this forum.

Not really true, you can't access the good stuff without having to pay to airliners.net. You can view the photos, you can read the forums, all for free.
The time, effort, costs and work to set up something like airliners.net would be more than you think, and even then you'd need to be A** quality to even get near airliners.net. It would be difficult, it would cost money. If it did become really popular, it'd cost you more surely? Say average photo at 200kb being downloaded X times a day, then X multiplied by the number of photos etc etc...
There are decent sites already, why try and mimic them with something thats only second or third rate?

-And just to add an idea of size to all previous answers, if you buy, let's say a small server, bi Xeon, 4GB of ram, 5 SCSI HDDs, and a big tapedrive to make backups (forget about CD-ROM), you'll have to give out around 10000$ ...

-wozza.... I've noticed that you've posted messages referring to airliners.net on a number of threads.
That site has nothing whatever to do with this one.
Let it drop now, eh?
Cheers

Hi, :D
I have thought of another ingenious idea which you lot are probably going to pick a lot of holes in, why do we not join forces and produce ourselves an aviation website to rival airliners.net
I am not very good at computers but if anyone here is lets go for it, we can make something to be proud of, something which isn't a rip off like airliners.net
So any computer genius out there or indeed all of you, put some ideas on the table.
It would be great to see a phot gallery to include the high quality photos posted in this forum,
Wozza
