I was checking out the area where a SAAF Dak crashed recently in real life with the loss of several lives (RIP). They hit the peak in inclement weather :

Following an A.I. aircraft until it flew into a mountain. The A.I. aircraft behave much better in FSX.

This is the airport where I learned to fly in real life in 1982. Flying the Dreamfoil Jetranger.

I've been trying my hand at scenery development for X-Plane. You use Trimble Sketch Up (formerly Google Sketch Up) or Blender (more complicated) to create objects. You then place the objects in custom scenery packages which can be created with either World Editor (WED) or Overlay Editor. Here is a sequence of creating the shipwreck boat at the uShaka Marine World theme park in Durban.

The untextured boat :

The textured boat (from photos and Street View)

In the correct place in X-Plane scenery :

Developers can also use a collection of generic scenery objects from opensceneryx :

Here is a Frigate I put in Table Bay (Cape Town)

I'm now working on the stadium that was built for the 2010 World Cup soccer, the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban and a short distance from the theme park where the shipwreck is located. This is quite a lot of work as there are many panels which have to be individually textured from a single texture file. The advantage is that you can use your own photos or street view photos to make photorealistic objects.

This is the block of flats in which I spent the first 9 years of my life... I modeled it and put it into X-Plane in the exact place...it is still there and this is what it looks like today (in X-Plane)...

There is some tweaking to be done, and X-Plane's terrain mesh has covered the road, but I'm working on it...

Here I am flying an MB 339 (free download) at FYWH. The South African Air Force operated MB 362 "Impalas" in Namibia (yes I was there and did my stint...) and the 339 is the closest model available for X-Plane.

Thanks Vet27, nice shot and informative advice. One, when I can afford a new, faster pc I will invest in X-plane. Got soo bored with the other lot.

It's much more rewarding when you create your own scenery!

I have only recently unpacked my machine and back in the hot seat (Dreamfoil Bell 407) making more scenery objects.

The last coach is a South African Railway coach and 100% my own work.

I haven't been doing too much virtual flying lately because of real flying, but here is a shot of the recently released B737-800 by EADT.

I don't spend much time here, but can I say I love the shipwreck. Brilliantly done, your talent is frightening!

Moggy

Thanks! There are of course guys who use programs such as AC3D who make much more realistic models. I use Sketch Up.
