    Spitfire AR501...getting close.

In chasing for images for the new Czech Spitfire book by Zdenek Hurt, Tony Clarke/Duxman kindly supplied this shot.

We are surely getting close to flying after this mammoth restoration.

The shot illustrates that Shuttleworth have opted to retain the curved Cannon shrouds, almost certainly inherited from an 'e' wing Mk XVI, when it was in service with the Central Gunnery School in April 1945, where it was also modified to accept a Gyro Gun-sight.

As it again carries codes from its Czech service in 1942, I wonder if the correct straight tapered shrouds might be a possibility for the future.

I thought the cannon fairings were fitted during restoration in the seventies after the chimney pots had been cut off for the BoB-film?

You may be right. Prior to the film the wings were not fitted at Old Warden but very early shots of AR501 show the correct straight tapered shrouds.

It's certainly come a long way.

I think this was taken right at the beginning of the strip down. Not sure what year it was. The watermark was just the year I uploaded it to my website.

Since then, I've grabbed a picture of it during my infrequent visits to OW.

This was the last picture I had. Some time ago!!

It has had several engine runs this summer. I believe the plan was to aim for a return at the Race Day finale, but last I heard that is unlikely to happen now.

I notice the spinner looks longer and more pointed? Or is this just an optical illusion.

A change from a DH metal propeller to a Dowty-Rotol wooden propeller.

Does the prop change have much impact on C of G?

Do we know what aircraft is benefiting from the De Havilland prop and spinner now that AR501 has been refitted with the correct Rotol unit?.

Didn't AR213 get the DH prop, or was it another?

I know that the De Havilland prop and spinner were taken off Hurricane Z7015 to be fitted to AR501 and that the Rotol RX5/10 broad root prop that was on AR501 was donated to Z7015. It is thought that the Rotol unit was originally from Hurricane MkIV KX829 and fitted to the Spitfire when both were at Loughborough.

'213 got the Spinner as she already had the ex-Charles Church Battle prop ready to go and the ex-'501 prop was pretty well at the end of her life and went into the spares package for the aircraft

Early photos of AR501 at Loughborough in October 1947 show it sporting a Dowty broad root propeller.

Have they found a starboard aileron yet? I heard there was a problem in that area.

She does look very nice indeed!

    M12,

I too would love to see the correct cannon shrouds fitted at some stage, as it makes things authentic (especially now a Rotol prop has been fitted), and it looks 'right' for a MKV of that period.

    Fingers crossed eh!

    Cheers

Problem is that the Mk V isn't a rare mark anymore and they all look the same
