    I note that on all the pictures I've seen of both B24 and B36 yokes the end of the yoke arms are flat and level facing the pilot, this appears to be a common feature for these types of aircraft, perhaps I'm wrong?

    I note that the particular yoke on eBay has no flat ends. Interestingly enough APHS has a similar type yoke listed as DC-4E

    Hi, having stripped back a British wartime / interwar Control Yoke (Sorry no ID on this and cannot post pictures but appears large and multi engine type) I note that at some stage it had been painted green. I would like to paint it back in its original colours and wondered if anyone could help me with the following information please?
    I) What was the primer colour used on British wartime or interwar years yokes.
    II) What type of green colour paint was used on British or interwar years yoke or even cockpits?

    Darrell:

    The DC-4E was a one-off prototype that flew in 1939 or 40. It has almost nothing in common with the wartime C-54 that evolved from it. I don't think the wheel on the APHS site is labelled correctly. If it actually came out of the lone prototype of that aircraft it would be a DC-4E wheel, not a C-54E that it's labelled as. That said, it certainly looks similar to the wheel used in later B-24s....but without the characteristic clear plastic windows used on those wheels and on B36 wheels. I've not seen a wheel like that one on the APHS site. While there is always room for doubt, I think the wheel currently on Ebay is an early B36 item. It looks to have a heavy coating of gloss paint. And the center mounting has been boogered up--the quintessential forcing of a square peg into a round hole.

    I don't know if I'm interpreting your question in the way you mean. Both the B24 and early B36 wheels are "dished". When laying flat on their backs, only the center hub contacts the table. There is about an inch of distance from the backside of looped handle part of the wheel to the table.

    Also, both the B24 and B36 wheels have flat "windows" at the pilot-facing ends of the stalks. Far as I know, all B24 and B36 wheels (of this style) had the clear plastic windows at the ends of the stalks. On original wheels these were a clear plastic material bonded to the hard rubber coating over the label "Microphone Push On". Captain's wheels had the left side labelled. Some B24s also had "Bomb Release" labeling under the opposite window. The windows on B24 wheels come in two variations, flush and non-flush. Any wheel that has the flats but no window covering is missing them...usually due to age, hardening, cracking to the point of powderization and flaking off. That's how my B36 wheel looked before I replaced the windows with clear shaped epoxy. This is a guess, but I think the windows on the Ebay wheel have been painted over.

    Gentlemen:

    Can anyone help with identifying what aircraft the wheel in the attached (rather poor quality) photos may have been mounted in. It was sold in an Ebay auction 8-10 years ago as a Nimrod wheel. It has what looks like a standard Douglas/Convair style cap base mounted that likely isn't original. I've done an online search and have not found a variant of the Nimrod that used this wheel. The company mentioned in the tag is out of Nova Scotia, Canada. It's now part of a larger corporation called Enterprise Fawcett, a foundry business.

    Very nice cap for the older style TU95 wheel. This particular example of wheel missing it’s switch housing on the right side.

    Interesting item but I think it's Japanese rather than German, having a Mitsubishi logo on the shaft. Nice item all the same.

    The eBay "Stuka" grip arrived today from Aus, Ian is right it is indeed Japanese it is from a Mitsubishi Ki-51 Sonia so quite a rare beast, the Japanese version of the Stuka so the seller was almost right! It's the first WW2 Japanese aircraft yoke I have ever handled and it is really chunky and almost too big for a fighter. The Ki-55 was also used in the Kamikaze role although I doubt this one was as it would either be blown up or at the bottom of the sea. I am pleased to add a Japanese yoke to the collection. I can't seem to upload photos at the moment but if anyone wants to see the photos then I can try again.

    Tornado IDS stick top

    Hello All,

    My recent addition : ACA1638 stick top from RAF Tornado IDS.
    It came in a nice box with foam insert. Looking at the box and the yellow label on the side i assume this is the original box. Can anyone confirm this?
    I have the same stick from a German Luftwaffe Tornado, however they use different part nr instead on the metal ID tag : SK26016
    Upon comparison there are some small differences :
    The main difference is the spring cover and red button beneath : The German version has a 'bubble' on top, while the RAF stick has a flat red button.
    The spring cover is different, too.
    Also, the German stick has the small button on the left, where it just has a blank on the RAF grip.
    On the pictures, the left one is RAF, the right one Luftwaffe. Any additions or corrections are always very welcome.
