    It will very likely be the GE F-414 INS6 or a higher thrust derivative. India will need to tie up with GE to develop the F-414 EPE Enhanced Engine, which will generate ~26,400 lbs of thrust in afterburner. GE had already supplied 2 F-414-INS6 engines to ADA for the Mk2 program back in 2017. Should be eminently doable for GE to get a Tejas Mk2 specific F-414 Enhanced Engine variant.

    Separate to the Boeing effort with Northrop Grumman, GE Aviation and the Navy have spent $100 million over 10 years developing elements of an F414-GE-400 “enhanced engine” upgrade, involving changes to the combustor and high-pressure turbine. Tests indicate the enhanced engine would provide 3 percent lower fuel consumption, increased time on wing and optionally 20 percent more thrust.

    “You could run [the engine] at today’s thrust level–22,000 pounds–with new materials and get a significant increase in time-on-wing because it’s more durable,” said Daniel Meador, of GE Aviation military systems operations. “If the customer needed an improvement in capability, they could do that, the hardware is already there. They could change the FADEC [full-authority digital engine control] software and get a 20-percent increase in thrust. You would see today’s excellent durability at a higher temperature.”

    -The Tejas test fleet has completed 4000 sorties till date and the nine SP acs in Squadron service has completed another 1000 sorties. 1000 sorties in such a short span of time is a remarkable feat considering that SP-7, 8 and 9 have been delivered to the squadron just recently.

    -The newly established second production line will start operations from next month.

    - A simulator will be installed at the Sulur airforce station to train young pilots before they take Tejas to the skies.

    Finally, long investment in Kaveri is paying off .... to be integrated with an aircraft for limited envelope flight testing. Kudo to the involved people for investing their life in the program!!

    Interesting development. To be integrated with an aircraft: does that mean to be hung on a quad (egA340/B747) in place of existing engine to allow testing?

    Integrated means that it would be part or all the propulsion system.

    Even though Kaveri went through altitude testing in Russia, it would still be the smart thing to do.

    Once test data shows satisfactory operation up to M 0.85 and 15km, it should be placed into an instrumented LCA.

    While integration, low and high-speed ground run on LCA are done, it should be validated and certified with at least twin-engine if not 4 engine planes.

    It should be clear NO, because we still have no plane and it does not make sense to put in use a brand new airframe. Even if France offers a used plane for it, we will heavily dependent on France for its up keeping, logistics and pilots etc.

    It will make sense to use one of existing platforms ... HAL and IAF are best guys to suggest the platform. With their close support, certification can be done in around 3-6 years.

    HAL has quoted an astronomical Rs 463 crore unit price for the 83 Mk1A tender. This makes Tejas mk1A more expensive than the Su-30MKI which is pegged at between Rs 415-425 crore. According to Ajai Shukla, HAL sells the MKI at Rs 425 crore to IAF since 2010 and according to the ENS report, it is Rs 415 crore.

    The euphoria within the defence establishment over the induction of the first indigenous Light Combat Aircraft into the IAF appears to have subsided with the Defence Ministry forming a committee to look into the “high price” demanded by Bengaluru-based public sector manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), for Tejas Mark1A.

    Sources told The Indian Express that in response to a request for a proposal for 83 Tejas Mark1A fighter jets issued by the IAF in December last year, HAL quoted a price of Rs 463 crore per jet in April. This raised eyebrows in the government, sources said, as the price compared unfavourably even with more modern foreign fighters. “The HAL supplies the more modern Russian Sukhoi fighter, which it assembles at Nashik, at Rs 415 crore. The Russians supply it at Rs 330 crore. The Swedish Gripen was offered to us for Rs 455 crore, and F-16 for Rs 380 crore, and both were to be made in India. The HAL itself gave us Tejas Mark1 at Rs 100 crore less. This price for an improved version seems high,” sources said.

    Concerned about the price for an indigenous fighter jet, which the government has been keen to promote under Make in India scheme, the committee set up by the Defence Ministry will look into the pricing of military equipment manufactured by defence PSUs. The committee is headed by Principal Advisor (Cost) in the ministry and is likely to submit its report in the next few weeks.

    Once the committee submits its report, the ministry will form a commercial negotiations committee (CNC) to bring down HAL’s price for the jet. The contract for 83 jets, sources said, will take another year before it is finally signed.

    According to sources, the Defence Ministry is also concerned about the delay in supply of the existing order of the first lot of 40 Tejas fighter jets. In last three years, only nine fighter jets in Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) mode were supplied against an order of 20. The order for another 20 Tejas jets in Final Operational Clearance (FOC) has not even begun, as the FOC has not yet been attained by the aircraft. The ministry has also agreed that the HAL will supply eight trainer aircraft out of 40, after the 36 Tejas Mark1 have been supplied. “The idea was that HAL will produce 18 Tejas fighters every year. That is the only way we can provide IAF to make up its numbers as its older fighters go out of service. But there has been a delay and we are in touch with HAL about it,” sources said.

    The ministry had also asked IAF about allegations that it had made constant changes in ASQR (Air Staff Quality Requirements), which could have led to the delay. They found that there have been no changes in the ASQR of Tejas Mark1A, since it was first formalised in 2014. Even in the case of Tejas Mark1, the IAF had given 135 concessions on the ASQR to HAL.

    Isn't it just natural that local manufacturing industry may have higher price, considering it also have R&D attached. Can't really compare it with Su-30MKI's or foreign analogs. Closest example would be the Japanese F-2's.

    Do I understand well that this translate to about 66M$ ?

    Sound fair for all that is included in the Teja (and the long Teja story). However, it would be cool to get the price down when you think at all that the IAF want the Teja Mk2 to be!

    HAL is just ripping IAF as its the only company that can make Tejas , Any thing more than 40-45 USD million for Tejas wont fly much and it would eventually impact how many gets operational in the IAF.

    Hopefully MOD can put a Never Exceed Price with HAL on unit cost of Tejas

    My reply was in the testing context only as testing would lead us to engine certification. Sorry, if I could not formulate it properly.

    First batch is for IOC fighters, so it won't be affected by slide in FOC deadline. The second batch of 20 jets were to be FOC standard. But that is mostly software related apart from the AAR probe, which has been in testing for some time now. Dry contacts have begun AFAIK. Actual aerial fuel transfer should start if no issues are seen.

    BTW, the journo does not seem to be aware that Gsh-23 gun firing has been delinked from FOC. It will be done, but FOC will not depend on that test point being completed.
