    Little footnote

    Friend of mine called up a wet grass strip he was flying into a while back to ask if there was any soft spots, to be told, yes one, but it's easily spotted as there is a Cessna 182 lying upside down on it.

    Stopped and walked back to measure landing roll, about 180 paces say 200m. Impressed given there was little headwind.

    Thanks to Martin and Mick from Horizon St Athan coming up to work on the oleo. Turns out left oleo had no oil in it so seal had dried out. Carefully topping up the oleo with oil the seal was massaged back into life and after a few puffs of gas finally stood on its own legs again.

    Will give it 24 hrs to settle down and then a local test flight to see how it copes. Right leg gas pressure fine so fingers crossed that problem might be fixed. Intend to source new seals for 2014 and have the oleos serviced on the annual check.

    Wonder what will go wrong next?

    i'm living this thread with you Dornier. I've got an Airtourer which has been great fun and relatively cheap to run over the 27 years I've had it. However it's just coming off it's C of A, for which, in addition to all the other costs, it required two new magnetos at a cost of nearly £2K. As the aircraft is probably only worth about £10K in the depressed market it does make you ask yourself if it's worth it. However every time I put it away after flying I think it is and worry about the bank balance later. By the way there are some good and relatively inexpensive aircraft tugs on the market which might prevent you getting a slipped disc moving the Dornier in and out of the hangar.

    Hi oz

    Will be interesting to see if the CAA reduction of red tape brings costs down too. Somehow I doubt it! Installed a 12v car winch to pull the aircraft into the hangar tail first, works well and runs off a car battery. Shades of GR1 being towed into a HAS back in Germany.

    Straight into the HAS wall..

    The red tape is basically saying all those must do lifed items etc in the manuals but not in a section 4 are not mandatory amongst other things on C of A aircraft, and puts the onus on the owner whether they comply with them.... it does seem in a way a back covering exercise by the CAA and one fears some aircraft that are maintained to a lower standard may have trouble being sold on until those items are complied with.

    St Athan

    Managed to finally get off for St Athan this morning. Farm strip still very wet but big fat tyres, a great wing and 270 HP did the trick.

    A brief refuelling stop and chat at Sleap then southbound past church stretton, Ludlow, Leominster, Hereford and Cardiff.

    Hopefully new oleo seals to be fitted this week, some work on the brakes and the aircraft will be in better shape for touring.

    Just what I was thinking. Writing to any Embassy asking permission to repaint a historic aircraft will immediately provoke a 'Nein' rather than take responsibility for saying 'Yes'! Do you think Tony de Bryun asked for permission to paint his Bronco in 1960s German colours, or any of the other owners of historic aircraft painted in German colours? It is British registered civil aircraft that can be painted in any scheme approved by the CAA. As long as it's not a current Luftwaffe type that could cause confusion with the real thing, I can't see any problem.
    Reminds me of the Midland air Museum at Coventry who asked permission from the Saudi Embassy to paint its Lightning in RSAF colours, to which they refused to allow them to put the Saudi flag on the tail...and that was a museum aircraft! Any excuse to say 'no' rather than risk saying 'yes' will always happen. Paint it as you wish and see if anyone objects? Brian Woodford painted his Dragon Rapide, G-ACZE in Kings Flight colours and put the Prince of Wales feathers on the tail. The Crown Copyright office objected and he politely told them it was a civil aircraft not being used commercially and he would paint whatever he wanted on it! QED
    Personally, I would like to see it in period Luftwaffe camouflage of grey & green with orange dayglo extremities. I have plenty of colour slides of these if references are needed.

    I am not averse to cocking a thumb at the establishment but felt it unwise to go against the CAA and so we dropped the idea of German markings. Rex Ford did suggest a half way house of a war bird paint scheme with registration on the fin and rudder but would prefer to get permission from the Portuguese for a drab green jungle scheme.

    Main priority to get the aircraft sorted and paint scheme further down the road. It is thirsty on fuel but carries four plus gear and can safely get in and out of short strips. Very well suited to the UK GA environment but not a long distance tourer hope to do more with it this year.

    Wednesday

    We are hoping to pick up the aircraft up on Wednesday from St Athan and will perform a short flight test in the local area then fuel up and take the Dornier back up to Cheshire.

    Had an experienced friend fly it at St Athan on Saturday post 50 hr check. Then we drove down yesterday and took a couple of the St Athan engineers for a shake down along the coast to Porthcawl. Tweeked the radios to get i/c balance right and eliminate background noise. Oleo still a bit soft after ok landing, checked pressures, decided seals still bedding in and took the aircraft back to Ashcroft.

    By way of a change headed north to Brecon and climbed to 5500 feet to get above the clouds and save a bit of fuel on the way home. Pleasant trip with plenty of breaks and started descent abeam Long Myndd weaved around other GA aircraft in the Sleap/Chester triangle and landed safely at Ashcroft after a 1hr 25min transit.

    Thanks to all at St Athan & Horizon for their efforts to get the Dornier sorted. A good place to keep a vintage aircraft.

    Ahhhh Dornier Porn looks good,

    Surprised you do not take it to some shows yet, something like the Victory show at Leicester I would have thought would welcome it.. That's a grass strip too and they operate a Hurri, And Dak off it during the show, amongst others

    Nice looking little strip too

    Did a tour of Snowdon this afternoon. Popped into Sleap, fuelled up and then routed Chirk, A5, Betys Co, A5 pass round Bethesda and off to Snowdon (peak clouded out) then home via Denbigh Moor and Jubilee Tower. Will post some pictures later.

    So you can fly with the rear door open? Surprised you haven't had requests to do air to air photography, seems an ideal platform high wing, no struts, I suppose the only disadvantage may be top speed.

    Hi Tony, yes have flow with the doors open but the stills above all taken via sliding panels in side windows. The video last year has some shots with the side doors open in flight but would remove doors and floor for a photo shoot. FG has a floor mounted camera door for vertical shots but for normal flights we keep a plywood floor in the rear.

    Hope these links work, landing and take off from farm strip. Landed a bit long as trees on short finals but wheeled it on at about 45 kts and it rumbled to a halt with room to spare. Take off always surprises me as the Dornier lifts off at 35-40kts and I then just allow it to accelerate a few more kts and climb out and away. The aircraft is big and thirsty but it can get four people into and out of some very small landing strips.

    Dornier; I applaud your patience and dedcation to keeping this beautiful aircraft flying..
    I assume you probably have these, already? Original Operating and Maintenance Manual and 6 panel, Large catalogue/brochure..

    Swap?

    Hi Joe

    Have the Maintenance but not the brochure. Fancy swapping it for an English Electric Lightning pilots manual?

    I am ex 11 Sqn Lightning pilot and my aircraft ended up in a front drive at Callington Cornwall but I do have some manuals rescued from the last days of RAF Binbrook.

    Always like flying light aircraft and when time and money permitted back in 1985 would drop in at the RAF Cranwell flying club and float about in the Tiger Moth. The Tiger guru back then was an old man called Dickie, ex driver, knew how to fly the Moth and a real gent.

    The Tiger harder to land than the Lightning in my opinion. You just pointed the rocket at the numbers checked the descent and cut power as the tyres touched, the Tiger all together more lively!

    Trains and Planes!

    Hoped to follow a steam train today (Great Britain VII) so removed right side door and floor so we could film through the floor (Photographic bomb doors) and side of the aircraft.

    Unfortunately train was late so we wasted an hour flying up and down the line from Shrewsbury before dropping into Sleap for fuel. After ringing head office the tour company rep on the train was kind enough to call back and we did find the train but further north and in a less than optimum position between Chirk and Wrexham.

    Hopefully some footage in due course.
