-always found full gloss a bit 'heavy', so I used to tone things down with a spot of semi gloss varnish over gloss paint, once all the decals were in place.

-I would go for satin varnish, I don't know if you spray or use a brush. I use Humbrol satin varnish 135 in a rattle can over acrylics with good effect.
Warning don't spray to close to the model with this let it drift on from a distance.

By about 1950 were spits painted in a matt,semi-Matt or gloss finish when in camoflage pattern.I am doing a mk16 revell re-issue of the icm kit.
