Great idea, and lets just keep it to the actual construction itself rather than the long tortuous political road to its construction.

Well thats an anti-climax. Where's the blokes with massive hammers, huge molten pots of metal, skips full of rivets? The romance is all gone.

That second picture, a mock up of a mock up. Odd.

Why is BAE Sub Systems building half an aircraft carrier?!?! Especially when one of the major arguments against 8 Astutes was that they didn't have the capcity to meet it before the new SSBNs were needed.

I thought Barrow had been withdrawn from building any sections of CVF so it could concentrate on subs?

Yeah you guys are right block 3 is going to be built by BVT on the Clyde due to the lack of capacity at Barrow but apparently Barrow will still be supplying engineering services to block 3 construction. I got those pictures from the Royal Navy sit and assumed they would be correct. Sorry for any confusion.

Cheers for clearing that up.

But again it begs the question, if current capacity isn't enough, why not expand the capacity? That is has been the norm ever since the industrial revolution, why stop now?

Because it would cost money and the Government doesn't seem to want to spend any on the military.

You are not going to believe this, but the Carriers may well get produced as CATOBAR  Last minute change being considered (read the article thoroughly)

Wont happen, the F136 is the alternate engine for F35's of all models. The F135 is currently powering all the prototypes including the F35B prototype. US government stopped funding the F136 a couple of years ago.

I would cry with Joy if this did happen.

F-35 C with more range, better internal space. The ability to use the hawkeyes ability to buy C-2 grey hounds.

Also the ability for French and American planes to land aboard the CVFs - i know this is stupid but I always got a little jealous watching the French pilots launching of the US carriers.

No, just some reporter noticing what has always been true (the carriers are designed to be converted to take catapults & there is a Plan B in case the F-35B goes sour) & jumping to completely unwarranted conclusions. As the minister said on the Today programme this morning, no final decision has been taken, but the F-35B remains the preferred option, as it always had. Nothing has changed. There is no news.

Uh, no, the F136 keeps getting funded by congress, it's hapening again this year, and the article has nothing to do with the choice between F135 and F136 it's all about the RR lift fan that goes in every "B" model regardless of engine choice.

"B" or "C" for the royal navy has always depended on 3 things, which plane is better, how well EMALS was coming along and cost.

The big question is where would this leave the RAF?

Is there an alternative to the RR lift fan easily available, or will the US still purchase them? And the F136 cancellation attempts have been stepped up this year, especially with the new administration trying to cancel them.

I had thought about the RAF question too, I assume that they'd still get half the aircraft, that or the RN would get all of them (but a lot less than the 150 originally planned) and the RAF would get none, or be promised more of whatever they plan on replacing the GR4 with. I have a feeling this will turn into another RAF/RN turf war if the govt. indicates they may only buy enough for the RN, which seems more likely if the CV is being purchased. RAF can't justify needing a normal aircraft that is altered for carrier use. I guess there's no chance of it being split between A and C versions. They are more similar to each other than the B version.

The RR lift fan is going in every F-35B that will be built for anyone (currently USMC, Spain, Italy, & RAF/RN).

So it won't really matter to RR if the RN doesn't buy them, they'll still have quite a big order.
