I think it is fair to say this is the aircraft that has carried the most impressive weapons load...!

Is it really safe to hang a bomb like that under the Huey's center line?

I'm thinking the hardpoint could be crushed into / through the floor in the event of a hard landing with the bomb still attached. There's seems to be practically zero ground clearance!
One would hope the bomb at least has a safety that would prevent it from detonating while still on the rack.

For impressive looking weapons load I think you can't really beat a "Loaded for Bear" Skyraider - particularly in the Sandy role in Vietnam.
In second place the A10 Warthog.

Dropped in combat yes.. Carried no.
By far the most impressive ordnance carrier so far was a Tu-95 with TSAR hydrogen bomb.

Or a B-36 with a pair of Mk 17/24s. Or with a pair of 44,000lb T-12 (conventional bombs). I suppose it could have carried 6 or 7 25Mt Mk41s but I don't recall if the service dates overlapped. I wonder how much range and speed a Bear would have carrying a bomb that wouldn't even fit in it.

The picture with the rocket pods got me to wondering why it seems that rocket pods tend to be used more by European air arms than the US (Navy, Marines, and AF)? Is there a reason why one would favor mostly rockets over mostly bombs, or is it more a doctrinal issue?

What is the heaviest bomb load ever carried by an aircraft into combat?

I would imagine it to be the B-52 in Vietnam at around 30 tons, although I stand under correction.
