-Mirage F2 was a single engined twin seat interceptor, some derivation of Mirage G-8, but without swept wings.. It has been cancelled due to Mitrage F1.

-The Mirage IIIF2 (Original designation) was actually meant as a testbed for the SNECMA TF-306 engine. It came into being after the poor performance of the Mirage IIIT at lower speeds. Differing from the IIIT by having a high wing and low tailplane. It was considered as a stop gap fighter for the French AF, until the Mirage G became available. Due to costs involved, the idea lost favour. Dassault then scaled down the aircraft and fitted the Atar engine, thus creating the Mirage F1.

-The Mirage F1 was not first the choice of the French Air Force to replace its Mirage III serie, it was "ordered" to buy it by the French government.
The company Dassault through buying its competiors in France came to be the only designer of jet fighter therefore being the only choice available. The Air Force was more interested in the up-coming Mirage 4000. The same situation repetated itself few years later when the French Navy had to replace its old Crusarder. The Admirals were looking at leasing or buying second hand FA-18 Hornet while waiting for the much delayed Rafale. Somehow they were "advised" to have their old Crusarder being up-graded by Dassault at a costly price. For many years to come the French aircraft carriers had to rely on the US. Navy for fighter cover or not going in harm's way. The Crusarder was not able to take on the MiG-29 or SU-27.

SOC, is that the South African one fitted with the RD-33 engine?
By: 15th August 2004 at 08:27 Permalink - Edited 1st January 1970 at 01:00
-That would be the one.

-Any reports on how the RD-33 equipped F.1 has performed? The RD-33 is rated at 81kN in full AB, whereas the Atar on the original F.1 is around 70kN in AB.

-Hi,
I found this article from Aerosud, the South African company involved in the RD33 Super Mirage F1 project. It looks it was only one plane modified with the RD33 and then no follow up since that.
SYSTEM ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT
The lead role that Aerosud played in the re-engining of the Mirage F1 and Mirage III-derived Cheetah aircraft with a variant of the Russian Klimov RD33 engine used in the Mig 29 Fighter has brought the company substantial International recognition. Aerosud was assigned overall system responsibility for this program, and also conducted the detailed design of all airframe and airborne systems modifications, whilst its Russian partners were responsible for the redesign of the engine and the design of a new accessory gearbox. Both the F1 and Cheetah prototypes were successfully flight tested and performed exceptionally well. The " Super Mirage F1" technology demonstrater was displayed and successfully demonstrated at the MAKS airshow in Moscow during August 2001.
