-I would recommend reading "F-15C vs MiG-23/25" by Doug Dildy and Tom Cooper which covered in detail the above engagement. According to Iraqi sources the Foxbats in question were MiG-25RBs, and their mission was to draw away escorting F-15s from the RAF strike package.

-The strike packages had no escorts. The F-15C/D were vectored by their AWACS to possible threats. The Iraqis had no ideas about the strike packages and their targets to react in time. Iraqi fighters in the air did not allow the the use of own SAMs in that very area.
Details are to be found in "Gulf Air War DEBRIEF" Discribed by the pilots that fought - published 1991 - very important, because no time is left to alter details afterwards.

-Did the American pilots detect the radio emissions from the MiG-25s' radar on their EW sensors? That would one way to determine which type of Foxbat they were. Does they USAF continue to describe the 2 MiG-25s as PDs?

Had a question about the famous air battle on jan 19 in which 2 x f-15s shot down 2 x mig-25
what versions of mig-25 were shot down ?
Did the mig-25 fire any missiles at the F-15s ?
was there any AWACS support for the F-15s ?
thanks
