We reached 70 pages and we entered a new year, time for a fresh start.

Old thread here: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?133324-RuAF-News-and-development-Thread-part-14

Is the latest VVS contract for Su-35S confirmed?

Perhaps a little status of current units delivered and on contract is due.

It's confusing whether that '50' is actually an order for 48 more.

Huh? i thought it was very clear - not 48 but 50. Difference this time is price and time required for delivery (50 in 5 years).

10 x 5 = 50

50 =/= 48

There is nothing to be confused by...

They plan to build 24 of them next year... Doesnt matter much to me it is only 10 for RuAF.

They built 48 of the damned things before a single one was even able to do actual combat patrol. Frames that were built delivered 3 years ago has flown like 60 hours on average. IE they are completely useless. No point of rushing production so that they can fly 20 hours a year...

Do we know what is eating the jet?

Il-214 has been frozen. They will reassess the program and make changes if the MOD wants to continue the program.

Makes sense- waste of money right now when the MOD needs to take care of the heavier and lighter transport spectrum first.

In the current times, it will be ideal for Russia to shelve certain projects and start up other ones. For instance, if recent deal for Su-35 is true in terms of costs, and being as cheaper now to produce than before, then I can imagine that it would be more ideal to come up with upgrades for Su-35 using technologies learned from PAK FA, than it is to actually induct PAK FA in any numbers.

I agree with your comment, but it seems that the Indian's are quite upset about it. Although, who cares really since Russia would have to foot a huge part of the bill to make the aircraft as well.

Better to develop T-50 airframe and divest Flankers away from multiple variations. Currently they have Su-30 variations for both domestic and export, Su-34M, and Su-35S. I hate to say it, but there isn't enough money around for them to keep all the lines open.

All lines need to stay open. they were still there in the 90s.
manufacturing single jet and single location can become hostage to quality control and labor. Pluse you cant do surge if there is need. Even AL-31 has 3 manufacturing sites.

Russia 'freezes' India out of MTA project, to proceed alone as Il-214

http://www.janes.com/article/57169/russia-freezes-india-out-of-mta-project-to-proceed-alone-as-il-214

Russia looks set to continue development of the Multirole Transport Aircraft (MTA) on its own after Ilyushin froze co-operation with India on the joint project, state media announced on 13 January.

With the preliminary design of the twin turbofan tactical airlifter now all but finalised, United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) will likely continue with the detailed design phase of the Il-214, as it is known in Russia, through to production without Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the TASS news agency quoted Ilyushin CEO Sergey Velmozhkin as saying.

"It has been frozen as a joint Russian-Indian project," he said.

While the report gave no particular reason for this development, it was reported in December 2015 that UAC and HAL were in disagreement over the type of powerplant to be fitted to the aircraft, with the former preferring the PD-14M - a modified version of the already in-service Aviadvigtel PS-90A-76 turbofan as fitted to the Il-76 'Candid' - and the latter wanting a completely clean-sheet engine with full authority digital engine control (FADEC).

"The PS-90 does not have FADEC but the necessity of such a system was not there in the technical specifications initially," the president of UAC, Yury Slyusar, told the Indian Economic Times at the time. "It was added later. The technical requirement [for performance] is fully satisfied with the PS-90 engine.

"So the official status is that we have finished the advanced preliminary design stage over a year ago [and] that has to be accepted by the Indian side. We hope they accept the design and move forward," he added.

The Il-214 is expected to have a payload of between 15 and 20 tonnes and a range of 2,500 to 2,700 km, which will put it in the same class of airlifter as the Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules (22 tonnes) and the Embraer KC-390 (23 tonnes).

Russia to fill gap left by An-70 with more Il-76MD-90A airlifters

http://www.janes.com/article/57172/russia-to-fill-gap-left-by-an-70-with-more-il-76md-90a-airlifters

Russia is to fill the gap left in its strategic airlift capabilities by the abandonment of the Antonov An-70 project with Ukraine with additional numbers of the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A, a senior service official said on 13 January.

The Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) is to receive an undisclosed extra number of the newly introduced Il-76MD-90A to offset at least some of the 60 An-70s that the service was due to induct, of which more than 12 were to be handed over by 2020, the commander of the Military Transport Aviation, Lieutenant General Victor Benedictine, reportedly told Russian journalists.

Co-development of the An-70 with Ukraine was ceased in early 2014 following the breakdown in relations between the two countries over the ousting of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych and Russia's subsequent invasion and annexation of Crimea. With relations no better some two years later, Russia appears now to have abandoned the four-engined turboprop aircraft entirely, in favour of its own upgraded jet airlifter.

The VVS has received the first of 30 Il-76MD-90A aircraft that are expected to be delivered by 2020. Also referred to as the Il-476, the Il-76MD-90A is an upgraded variant of the Soviet-era Il-76 'Candid' that features a digital 'glass' cockpit as well as modernised flight, navigation, and communication systems. Structural improvements include a modified wing and reinforced landing gear. The engines have also been updated, giving the aircraft a 60-tonne payload (up from 40 tonnes for the baseline Il-76) and a 12% reduced fuel consumption.

The upgraded platform can fly up to 8,500 km with a 20-tonne payload (or 4,100 km with a 50-tonne load), which compares favourably to the 6,598 km with a 20-tonne payload of the An-70. The Il-76MD-90A has a 60-tonne payload compared with 47 tonnes for the An-70.

Previously the VVS has stated a requirement for 100 such aircraft (as well as about 40 Il-76MD-90A-derived Il-478 tankers and an expected 20 A-100 Airborne Warning And Control System [AWACS] platforms), of which 30 have so far been contracted.

Russia to fill gap left by An-70 with more Il-76MD-90A airlifters

Interesting, An-70 has been dead for a number of years now. Still, it does have some capabilities the Il-76MD-90A lacks: wider fuselage and operations in shorter runways.

There only are two.. the more advanced Su-30s from Irkut (variations MKI, MKA, MKM, SM) and the cheaper Su-30s from KnAAZ (variations MKK, M2, MK2).. That is all..

Also, VKS won't be acquiring any more Su-30 from KnAAZ.

Russian Company Delivers Eight Il-76 Aircraft to 'Unnamed' Asian State

Interesting. Aircraft are second hand because deliveries have been fast. Maybe China. It will be a while before Y-20 is ready.
