    Instead of wasting money on Tu-160, they should put that into PAK DA.

      RadDisconnect - I disagree. For one, Tupolev hasn't done anything in a long time and it remains to be seen what kind of shape they are in. How well they do with this refresher (the upgraded Tu-160) will show a lot. Additionally, a next gen bomber will need to be a flying wing design. It is better for the Russians to spend some time mastering that with the Okhotnik drone before going about a far more expensive bomber.

        Besides the need for bringing Tupolev up to speed as explained by XB-70 above, I don't think investing in the fastest and most powerful strategic bomber in the world in the times we live in could be wasting money. It serves a critical purpose for Russia and will probably keep doing so for quite a while after PAK-DA is in service, given both programs run in parallel to a great extent. In fact as a part of the nuclear triad, Tu-160 is a probably more effective and survivable than a subsonic bomber. PAK-DA will cover many other roles, among them probably many conventional ones where the Tu-160 would be a complete overkill, and other newly developed ones where a big plane with big endurance, power generation and payload capability would be a great advantage. It will probably be a generalist while Tu-160 will remain the strategic bomber specialist.

          Tu-160 is a much much cheaper NC deterent design than any future PakDa will ever be.
          And with that who knows when a PakDa will enter service, perhaps not even worth the effort for Russia. Just go with the Tu-160, hopefully they can find some kind of dual role with some non-NC weapons

            The PAK-DA is an replacement for Tu-95, but not the Tu-160. Also, it's about 15 year away from the start of production at least

              They admit they are 5-10 years behind western MMIC industry, 2019 they gave a time estimate of 3-5 years for
              photonic
              integrated circuits (FIS)

              , 2020 they expect to have half of production be domestic instead of from imports for their semiconductor industry

              Hell it looks they have plans for what looks like photon radar balloons to detect low altitude targets more far away by achieving more height. This **** would be awesome in my opinion to use with air defenses. it might be a target in the air but hopefully air defenses would provide coverage for it from being attacked. See attachment of what I mean.

                      Russia can afford TU-160M2, PAKDA, 6G fighter, UCAV all at same time. you can see this from working IL-96M and C929 projects simultaneously. this approach of old and new development.

                              I find the customary doubt-sowing job here uninteresting, but there are some dates that may be considered:

                              Now KAZ has begun to create prototypes of PAK DA (their number is not revealed), and the rollout of the first of them is planned to be implemented in 2021 or 2022. The military previously came from the fact that the first flight of the PAK DA will make in the years 2025-2026, and mass production will begin in 2028-2029. This work will continue, and the terms remain the same, says a top Manager of one of the enterprises of the aviation industry, however, in light of the Ministry of defense plans for a massive acquisition of Tu-160M2 purchase PAK DA is unlikely to be large. "Apparently, they will focus on how to make the most of the available machines full potential, but PAK DA will remain as a Foundation for the future," he said. The interlocutor of "Kommersant" notes that such an ideology is actively promoted former Deputy Minister of defense, now Deputy Prime Minister for defence industry Yuriy Borisov in the procurement of fighter aircraft, when the rate was made for active use su-35S, and buy the latest su-57 "shifted right".

                              We will see, but I doubt PAK-DA seeks to substitute Tu-160 or that the new production of the later will mean the former gets cancelled. They now serve different purposes IMHO. So MoD gets their most urgent need of an strategic missile carrier addressed with the Tu-160M2, while less pressing requirements will be addressed with the PAK-DA.
