    A prototype of the all-composite aircraft STR-40DT will be shown at the end of the year



    A prototype of the 19-seat all-composite aircraft STR-40DT, developed at the Siberian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation (SibNIA) named after SA Chaplygin, will be presented by the end of 2018. The aircraft will be adapted for the harsh conditions of the Russian North and can fly for a distance of up to 4000 km. This was toldTASS scientific supervisor of SibNIA Alexei Seryoznov.

    Seriousov specified that the class of 19-seat aircraft in Russia has not yet been submitted.     "Aviation of Russia" has already talked about a new aircraft, which is being developed in SibNIA on the basis of a Soviet light jet for local airlines Yak-40. Work on the all-composite aircraft STR-40DT with capacity for 19 seats began in 2013 at the request of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia within the framework of the Federal Target Program "Development of Civil Aviation Equipment in Russia for 2002-2010 and for the Period until 2015".

    STR-40DT will completely repeat the aerodynamic scheme of its predecessor: it is a twin-engine, all-composite, monoplane with a trapezoidal wing, a T-shaped tail unit with a significant excess over the fuselage. The Yak-40 wing has an elongation of 8.93 and a span of 25 m. Obviously, the new integral-wing wing will have a much longer elongation, so that it is possible to fly over long distances - up to 4000 km.

    Main technical characteristics of STR-40DT:

    Empty weight - 6500 kg
    the maximum weight is 13000 kg
    number of passengers - 19-32 people
    flight range - 4000 km
    altitude of the flight is 9500-10000 m
    running start - 800 m
    mileage - 600 m
    carrying capacity - 3200 kg
    the cruising speed is 650-700 km / h
    fuel consumption - 500-550 kg / h

    The developed aircraft is a demonstrator of the capabilities of polymer composite materials technologies when used in light turbojet passenger aircraft at high flight speeds (600-700 km / h). In the framework of the state order, the Institute carried out studies of PKM technologies in aircraft construction, allowing 2-3 times to increase the productivity of new aircraft and to reduce the cost of their production by 50%. Obtained demonstrators are a by-product not intended for commercial use. They only confirm the possibility of developing and constructing a fully composite production vehicle with the required flight characteristics, as well as characteristics of strength and economic efficiency.

        Random question: How come the KJ2000 (the Chinese "A-50") has two massive ventral fins for stability, whereas the A-50/50U doesn't?

                  In the latest Air International.
                  There was an updated article covering VKS force and structure development.

                  As i have stated several times in the past, VKS now operate a very small number of legacy 9.12 Mig-29 jets.
                  Only now, it seems that those numbers are even lower.

                  If we exclude the Navy Mig-29K/KUB and the 28 Mig-29SMT delivered in 2015 and 2016. And the former ex-Algerian 34 SMT's.
                  Then there are only one full Sq of legacy Mig-29 left in Russian AF. Namely the Frontline Erebuni AirBase in Aremenia. Pluss a few units at Liptesk and Astrakhan training senter.

                  Most former Mig-29 pilots have now been re-trained for different Flanker Air Regiments.

                  The Mig-35 are still awaiting production order..

                    Add to this^^, there are now 830 combat jets within VKS today, spread around 5HQ District in Russia.


                    Within these district, the modernized and new build units now comprise of 70-80% total.

                    I suspect it contains every minor upgrade such as Su-24M's SVP-24 etc.

                    As for Flankers, there are only 50 non-upgraded Su-27P/UB left in service, spread across VKS.
                    An order for 36 Su-27SM3 upgrade of legacy Flankers was signed back in mid-2015, in which a few has already been delivered.
                    These units was produced in the mid-80's and still have lots of life left. They will be overhauled with 40 years and 2000hour extension in the same contract.

                      The director of directorate of programs of military aircraft of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the ex-commander-in-chief of the Air Force of Russia Vladimir Mikhaylov has reported about the research works on creation of the heavy shock UAV which are conducted in experimental design bureau "Dry" in 2014.

                      "Now works are conducted, we do work on "Dry", "Hunter" is called. This car very perspective, goes research work till 2015, with the subsequent transition to developmental works now", - Mikhaylov on air of Echo of Moscow radio station has told.

                      Characteristics of the developed UAV don't reveal now. According to open data, his take-off weight will be 20 tons that will make it the heaviest of the developed devices of this type. It was reported that for the first time he will fly up in 2018, and in 2020 it will be taken advantage.

                      In 2017 the photo of "Hunter" which is cut out from the presentation of the Russian Defense Ministry judging by which, the device is developed according to the scheme of "the flying wing" with the three-rack-mount chassis has been distributed in the Internet.

                      Earlier informed interlocutor of Interfax has reported about tests of the heavy shock Altius-O UAV weighing more than 7,5 tons developed by the Kazan experimental design bureau of Simonov.

                      The Deputy CEO of Tekhmash (enters into Rostec) Alexander Kochkin in March, 2018 has told Interfax that the concern has begun development of fighting loading for UAVs - it can be both means of infighting, and an air bomb.

                      The chief designer - the vice-president of OAK for innovations Sergey Korotkov in December, 2017 has reported to Interfax that in Russia work on creation of shock UAVs which will be able to be organized in groups and to be coordinated among themselves via secure channels of communication.

                      Development of the heavy UAV was announced at a forum "Army-2017" by the CEO of RAC MiG Ilya Tarasenko. In November of the same year the representative of the company has noted that they in study have UAVs weight from ton to 15 tons.

                      The Russian President Vladimir Putin said on board of the Russian Defense Ministry at the end of 2017 that at implementation of the new state program of arms the particular emphasis on equipment of troops will be placed by precision weapons, pilotless shock complexes and also the newest systems of investigation, communication and radio-electronic fight.

                      The Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoygu reported about plans of equipment of the Russian Armed forces shock UAVs in October, 2017. "In the nearest future on equipment of Armed forces complexes with the multipurpose unmanned aerial vehicles capable to solve not only prospecting, but also shock tasks will begin to arrive", - Shoygu has said.


                      From bmpd we will remind that as reported our blog with reference to the publication of the Air&Cosmos magazine a year ago, within research "Hunter" is conducted creation of the hardly noticeable S-70 unmanned aerial vehicle. Works on research "Hunter" are carried out by PJSC Sukhoi Company within the contract of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation given on October 14, 2011. The purpose of research is creation of pilotless prospecting and shock system which would have the high speed and autonomy. BLA S-70 on the subject "Hunter" is characterized as "the unmanned aerial vehicle of the sixth generation".

                      It was reported that the demonstrator of BLA S-70 has been made at the Novosibirsk aircraft factory of V.P. Chkalov – PJSC Sukhoi Company branch, and the first flight of the demonstrator has been planned for 2018 earlier. The mass of BLA is in range of 10-20 tons, and the maximum speed is estimated at 1000 km/h.

                                Seems it's an entirely unique class of weapon, intended more for soft targets rather than bunker busting (although the Mods 1 & 2 do have a delayed impact fuze).

                                      40N6 has been operational since 2013 atleast in intial configuration with range of 390 km and altitude of 30 km but progressively its capability was added and the final configuration of 40N6 has range of 400-450 km and max altitude of interception of 185 km.

                                      One of the key problem Almaz mentioned to test 40N6 was lack of availability of targets to test these new missiles , probably since then they have got these targets which can emulate speed of 4800 m/sec +

                                          It would seems stange if Vityaz is not to be field tested in Syria.. on the other hand, no rush.
                                          Putin just signaled some hardliners towards Israeli and US before the Summit talks. He said its out of the question to see Iran gone from Syria.
                                          And that is US bargining ship, if they are to leave Syria.

                                          So it seems Russia are to stay in Syria for a very long time.
