        Russian sources in early December disclosed the designation Kh-50 for new Russian airborne theatre-level (substrategic) cruise missile. Purchases of production Kh-50 missiles are planned under Russias State Armament Programme for 201827 (GPV-2027), the sources added.

        Developed by Raduga Design Bureau of Dubna within the Kh-SD (Sredney Dalnosti, medium-range) programme, the Kh-50 is expected to be a subsonic cruise missile utilising the guidance system of the strategic Kh-101 missile but with a smaller, low-observable airframe, similar to the US AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Stand-off Missile (JASSM). Research and development work on the Kh-SD began in early 1990s, but was subsequently suspended for a number of years.

        Designed to fit in the weapon bays of the Tupolev Tu-22M3 theatre and Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers, the Kh-50 missile is about 6m (19.7 ft) in length about 1.5 m (4.9 ft) less than the Kh-101 and weighs around 1,600 kg (3,527 lb). Powered by an OMKB izdeliye 37-04 (or TRDD-50B) turbofan engine, the missile is expected to achieve a range of over 1,500 km (810 n miles), a cruise speed of 700 km/h (378 kt), and a maximum speed of 950 km/h (513 kt).

        The missiles body has a flattened cross-section and faceted sides; this shape combines the requirements of radar cross-section reduction and the most efficient use of the heavy bombers weapon bay capacity when loaded on six-round rotating launcher. The guidance system includes strap-down inertial navigation corrected by GPS/GLONASS for the cruise phase, and an Otblesk electro-optical digital scene-matching area correlation (DSMAC) system for use close to the target. Apart from the low-observable airframe, to penetrate the enemy air defence the Kh-50 missile uses low-altitude flight profile and is equipped with self-protection devices, including a small active electronic jammer and towed decoys.

          Another Russian development designed to operate in conditions of strong enemy air defense is a new tactical operational hypersonic missile developed jointly by the head enterprise of the Corporation Tactical Missile Arms Corporation in Korolev and the State MRC "Raduga" in Dubna as part of the program "Hypersonic guided missile "(GZUR).             Well that got my attention. AFAIK Kh-101 does not use towed decoys, and it is huge.

            The 10 Ansat-U that were ordered earlier this year have all been delivered. In total the RuMOD has received 50 Ansat-U to date. Total production has been 80 units, including 50 mil birds, 7 pre-serials, 12 civilian birds with FBW controls and 11 with the new hydro-mechanical control system.

              Yes but it got 350 % more range too.

                Im curious about the current status of it, and number of modules in the 5.1 Kilowatt variant. My estimates so far based on emitted power put it in at least 981 modules. Cooling capacity (or what spared for the Zhuk AE) Appears to be 7.6 KW/sqm or roughly half of the AN/APG-79 (15.6 KW/Sqm). The module's peak power appears to be 5.2 Watt.

                In terms of potential the 688 mm aperture area of Zhuk AE could accommodate 1452 TRM. However this assume whole aperture is used for it. Structural and module technology will limit it. Assuming same cooling capacity and 95% "fill factor" The potential module count could be 1380 with Average power limit of 1790 Watt (1.7 KW) Assuming 25% duty cycle of typical pulse doppler operation. The peak power of the radar would be in order of 7.1 KW. With range potential of 297 km for 3 sqm RCS.

                do you guys think that performance figure realistic ?

                For using GaN module with say peak power of 40 Watt, the cooling capacity required must be 58.6 KW/Sqm.

                    From what I read in an interview the Wide Body market in China is so huge that even if Russia does not buy these they would still go much beyond break even for this project. Reason China insisted they make these in China , From all forecast of Boeing Airbus etc they see the greatest prospect for Wide Body in china

                                    still curious about the state of Zhuk-AE. If 2018 is a real date, there shouuuld be a sign of production Particularly the version with larger module counts.
