Sputnik news, what I read from this article is that Russia strongly dislikes any Swedish (Finish) cooperation with NATO. Gripen is perhaps a "partial NATO" aircraft rather then directly from the "devil himself"

Weak journalism. They don't check even basic, widely known facts before publishing: 'The contract with Brazil stipulates 36 fighters and all of them will be built locally.'

how exactly can Sweden/Finland cooperate with Nato. Nato membership does not mean you can buy weopons cheaper.

Atech Negocios has been chosen to produce simulators, training systems and ground support systems for the Gripen NG multirole fighter being produced for the Brazilian Air Force.

The programme was signed between Saab and the Brazilian Federal Government (Ministry of Defense through the Aeronautics Command, COMAER) in October 2014.

As part of this programme, several new fundamental systems and capabilities are flight tested and demonstrated for Gripen NG.

These new systems and capabilities will also form the basis for further upgrades of the current Gripen C/D fleet, Saab said on its website.

Saab Brazil Gripen programme director Mikael Franzn said: "Saab and Atech enter into a partnership regarding the development simulators, training systems and ground support systems for Gripen NG.

Finland is increasing training with United States... first with F-15's and soon US is sending land forces for the very first time. I wouldn't be surprised if both Finland Sweden join NATO before 2020.

I hope Russia joins NATO before Finland and Sweden do.

Think of the economies of scale if Russia bought F-35, too! I'm sure generous ol' LM would pass all those savings on to their customers (rather than exploiting its quasi-monopoly position ).

The Swedish government will soon place a structured offer to India to push through the Gripen-NG fighter aircraft deal, a product of Swedish defence major Saab, which is also keen to develop production processes in India. Sweden offered the Gripen-NG deal to India when a high-powered Swedish trade delegation visited the country in February this year.

The structured offer could comprise a combination of technology transfer and setting up of a local facility in India to produce aircraft coupled with investment commitments, an Indian embassy official in Sweden said, adding that Saab has already prepared a blueprint for the Indian Air Forces entire defence system. The IAF pilots are likely to take a test flying of Gripen, a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft, by the end of this year.

Indian media are highly unreliable -- it will be interesting to see if there are any Indian officials present on May 18, that should give an indication on whether this rumor is true or false.

I think we are discussing 6 billion deal. 30 Textron Scorpins possibly...and few UAVs.

It seems the Brazilian President is being suspended. According to the UK Channel 4 news coverage I saw, power passes to the vice president but the vice president is under investigation. Next in line is the leader of the lower house, but same thing - suspended. Next is leader of the upper house... but that person is under investigation. Not sure if the people who drafted their constitution foresaw any more than 3 replacements for a suspended president!

If there is widespread corruption in Brazil I wonder if someone corrupt, somewhere in the system was connected in some way with the Gripen deal and what would happen if it came to light that money had been paid. Could the deal be halted or is it too late for that?

It is way too late. Besides, let's remember that the Gripen still is the preferred aircraft for the air force.

so you are training on part time basis with 30 years old F-15s. Nato in 2020 will be far less capable and less important than what it has now.

Just in case anybody from Finland is wondering about it: Gripen does have a service life of 8000 hours, same as the F-35

I think the possibility get engines, missiles and weapons in the first place is the aim.

USSR is flying with 55 years old bombers. I bet Finland and Sweden could rise the stardard of NATO considerably and thus it could become capable again ...). Also we cannot join the Warzaw Pact as it does not exist.

To judge from an official but closed briefing I had recently, Russia will find that NATO will be delivering a few surprises between now and 2025.

It seems Botswana has initiated talks with Sweden regarding around 8 Gripen C/D:

NATO is more capable than Russia and in future even more so. Russia is already turning into backwards nation but then again becoming a North Korea II seems to be Tsar Putin's master plan.

Why bother to pay for phone calls to a country on a different continent when they could call the next door country which has a bunch of unused Gripens for far less a minute?

2025 is too far and even if decision is made it cannot be implemented to give surprise. The future of Europe will be decided in Middleast.
