    Low alt refueling
    Reduced foot print
    Commonality with other air forces
Or something that hasn't surfaced yet (they are the user. They know).

But don't take me wrong, the KC30 is a great airframe, especially for long range refueling and cross country deployment but tactically it remain less efficient.

Japan attributes F-35 crash to pilot disorientation.

European sales impact of eliminating Turkey from F-35 program. (Of course, this only takes into account what is presently on the books. The lifetime footprint would be a lot lower.)

European stealth fighter program to start with a demonstrator (so like Japan?).

"Airbus Defence & Space and Dassault promised that this would 'initiate demonstrator programmes for launch at the Paris air show'."

Commonality with the USAF, I think you mean. It's unlikely that they'll be operating with the JASDF, & I think that's the only other KC-46 customer so far. Of non-USAF tanker operators they might operate with, Italy has KC-767 & everyone else has or is buying A330 MRTT.

Meh... Polish, Finish, Greek, Spanish, and Swiss orders will more than make up for it

We'll throw in donating the Turkish F-35s to Kurdistan just for the giggles

I really doubt that the raw user requirements had much input into the selection. Much more likely to be some political posturing, or a redundant second-source 'insurance'.

Still if they want to stand-up an entirely new supply chain for a single-digit fleet it's their money to burn. The Thai Air Force model if you will.

Think the Polish is the realistic take away here, the rest. Meh..

That is a real problem (establishing compatibility betweeen JASDF and SCAF)

if France start to think at defending their oversee territories with a fresh look then that would be the least difficult to achieve (but the more costly).

As a Finn who stood next to F-35 last Saturday I really hope we'll choose Gripen E (or Rafale or Typhoon).

it's on the way with new patrol boats and very long flights to e.g. La Runion. France has the second largest maritime EEZ, and should take care of it.
