they stand more to lose than gain if they did.

-No, Russia is more into supporting Syria's secular government than any particular political movement in the Middle East. Russia gains more with stability in Syria.

They stand to gain unlimited benefits by intervening. first thing is credibility. with credibility comes alot of contracts in the regions.
Turkey largest army in Nato now consumed in fighting kurds/Islamist and currency hit is so hard that Turkey will never be able to buy imported weopons on large scale. ultimately it will be thrown out from NATO as society will not be fit.
this is loss of confidence.

Russia didn't bat an eye when ISIS executed those Russians.
Russian participation means ISIS will start targeting Russia, and when they target Russia, they're going to use soft targets.
when they go after soft targets, no shortage of wannabe suicide bombers they can recruit from Chechnya or Dagestan where there's plenty of crazed extremists, might even Tatarstan.

-Your living in the past. Russia will punch Middleast very hard in various ways indefinitely.
Russia has built very effective electronic and training capabilities and those capabilities are improving and very big market for exports.

"We are already providing Syria with fairly strong support with technology and the training of military servicemen," the Russian president said.
my predictions is that combination of low oil prices, expensive western weopons and dysfunctional system of governance most of Middleast will decompose into tribes.

-Some of those photos are in Novorosiisk. It even says so on the images.
One of them is from back in 2008, troops being shifted over to Abkhazia.
THe Syrian express has been operating for years. This is nothing new, even if an escalation in deliveries.
Does not even come close to indicating a Russian unit is entering the country to take part in combat, unless you count small advisor numbers.
For example, one of those ships with BTR-82s on it....those vehicles have already been seen in combat- with Syrian crews and personnel around them.

-I was about to say that.. Neither the landscape, nor the architecture on the pictures matches what I would imagine as Syria.

-There are small number of advisers in Syria. They've been there forever. 1,000 is probably an absurd overestimate and its probably no more an a few hundred. What Assad is getting is stepped up deliveries of kit and especially command and control equipment. The stuff you see on those LPD's is C3 vehicles -- older gen but better than anything the Syrians have ever seen. It might make their arty somewhat more lethal and less of a Hail Mary.
The stories of Su-34's s are almost certainly nonsense. The Israelis would have an embolism and would be screaming about it on every news channel. If I were Vlad I'd send over some Hell Ducks just to get some nice videos out of it, but alas they haven't made me Czar of all the Commies yet.

-I don't think Russia will send Su-34 to Syria as they more need them at home and even less, that RuAF will use them in low altitude diving against ISIS using unguided rockets and bombs. Most probably those pictures in Theaviationist are from Aviadarts competition, where pilots use only unguided rockets and bombs without using radar and optics as it is competition of pilot skills, not plane capabilities.
If they will send planes, they will send Su-24M2 and they are more than enough to effectively bomb ISIS.

there more than few thousands when you consider the embassy protection and Damascus/coastal areas are relatively better protected considering the level of terrorist threat.

Su-34 is only effective when its part of EW package supporting Tu-22M . Tu-22M give it flexibilty to strike north and south in syria in same mission as rebels will not know which flight is for which city untill last moment. this Turkish and Isreali will be communicating upto incoming raids. thats why communication jamming very important. this thing can disorganize the whole rebel moment.
I dont think its in Israel interest to make too much noise about it as wealthy Arabs have low opinion about Israel failure to stop Iran nuclear deal. Israel is suppose to control EU/US.
and if Russia decide to bomb and Israel make noise about it and not stop it than they will start asking there investments regarding israel.

If this is true, then are the Russians and Americans working together?
Also this would explain all of the concerns with Turkey pushing for a U.S. no fly zone.
This could easily spiral into a nasty air war.
