    Flawed flight-control logic triggered AW609's in-flight break-up: report

ANSV says the accident happened during a third round of high-speed dives using the programme’s second flight-test prototype (N609AG), with two previous efforts that day having passed off without incident.

The pilots commenced the dive with a 180 left turn, aiming for a speed of 293kt (542km/h), but on roll-out observed the start of “slight lateral-direction oscillations”.

These were not initially countered as the crew believed they were “self-damping” but as they grew in amplitude and frequency, the pilot flying attempted to correct the roll with “counterphase input roll manoeuvres and then pedal inputs”.

“However these actions did not dampen the oscillations, which instead became divergent, bringing the sideslip angle to reach values above the maximum allowed in those speed conditions,” says ANSV.

Flawed flight-control logic meant that pilot inputs to counter the excessive roll, and then yaw, had the effect of simply amplifying them, it says.

This caused the AW609 to reach a sideslip angle of 10.5 - well above the 4 maximum – “so inducing contact of the right proprotor with the right wing due to excessive flapping of the proprotor blades”. [...]
ANSV says insufficient flight and wind tunnel testing of the aircraft’s new tail configuration contributed to the lack of data on how it would perform at speed.

Do we have any figures on Mi-26T2 cost for comparison?

Not an easy task, because the Mi-26s are rarely bought alone.. usually they are a part of some package by Russian helicopters..

            FY2005: Venezuelan contract for 15 helicopters - six Mi-17V-5, eight Mi-35M2s and one Mi-26T - worth $201 mil
            FY2006: Venezuelan contract for 38 helicopters - 14+18 Mi-17V-5, two VIP Mi-172s, two Mi-35M2 and two Mi-26T - worth $484 mil

Well well well! Reversal of previous decision & a significant cut in numbers. We built 64, then decided to replace them with 50 new ones, & now instead of that we're going to rebuild only 38 of the 64 old ones.

Yes is it clear whether there will only be 38 in use or if some will be old and some "new"? I thought Boeing weren't going to support the D any more? What is the thinking I wonder.

I imagine the thinking is that $488m is much less than $2.3bn.

Probably, but it's a very low number if they aren't using something else for part of the mission.

French military helicopter readiness depends on fleet

PARIS — The latest official update on readiness of French military helicopters show an average availability less than 50 percent, with the Tiger attack helicopter only ready for operations a quarter of the time.

The French Army fleet of 59 Tiger attack helicopters was last year ready for operations an average 25.6 percent at a total annual maintenance cost of €88.61 million (U.S. $98.2 million),
the Defence Ministry said in response to a written question from Member of Parliament Franois Cornut-Gentille.

The Tiger’s 2016 availability compares with 21.4 percent in the previous year and is based on an average age of 5.5 years.

A low availability of French military helicopters and high cost of maintenance have sparked concern, leading Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to pledge last November an availability boost to an average 50 percent across the fleets, with special attention paid to the Tiger.
