Not really news, but interesting statements from Safran Engines (Snecma) CEO. "RR is our natural partner" and, more interesting, workshare on future FCAS engine more or less decided. UK and Fr share a common view on the consolidation of FCAS concept before opening it to other nations (particularly Germany) (DGA).

Good news to hear something from the project at least. It might not sound like much, but based on some of the other threads here, the UK and France being able to split responsibilities on a major project is no small thing.

Absolutely. The Thals guy also said that work about sensors is doing very well, partly because teams already know each other from old times when they worked together on european active radar projects (GEC Marconi, Thompson and Dassault Electronics). He also said that, if governments would be interested, common technological bricks could be shared for Typhoon and Rafale MLUs.

Halloweene, you mentioned some (French) industry sources thinking the British were using FCAS as a 'make work scheme'. What was the thinking behind that?

                        Did anyone else catch this:

                        http://www.janes.com/article/65514/s...ornet-fighters

Spain has set out it's post 2030 FCAS plan- Typhoon and a UCAV.

The plot thickens as we see at least 3 of the 4 Typhoon partners looking to bolster their Typhoon fleet with a UCAV and calling it FCAS.

It looks more and more as if Europe will develop a UCAV to partner its fast jets, but I have to wonder if the political climate is what is driving concerns about Britain's commitment rather than hard evidence?

From what i heared (understood), they said that SDSR said that FCAS would not be purchased as operational for RAF, because of an eventual redundancy with F-35 program. Uk is of course still partnering in the program, but ppl i heared of said they thought it was more to build technology bricks than looking for an operational drone system. However, they mentioned that FCAS should be seen as a much wider scope than simply a combat drone (including UK F-35 that may use those tech bricks??). Of course, i'm not aware of the Uk industrials opinion on that topic. And FR industrials opinion may change also. I hope so!

Someone from CEP (Centre d'Essai des Propulseurs) that hotparts for the Safran proposed engine for FCAS (basically an improved M-88 without afterburner) would reach 2600 K

MUX By 2026: Marines Want Armed Drone ASAP To Escort V-22

we’re trying to accelerate MUX and field it in 2026,” said Barranco, using the acronym within an acronym adopted for the sea-based drone. (MUX stands for MAGTF Unmanned eXpeditionary; MAGTF, in turn, stands for Marine Air Ground Task Force). For manned aircraft, Barranco said, “we have a lot of testing requirements. A lot of the burden in test is really related to aviation life support systems, air crew survivability, which we don’t have in an unmanned system. Crashworthiness. G-(force)-compliance for the air crew.” Since that won’t be needed for a drone, he said, “MUX could fill that gap, temporarily, to escort the Osprey.”

GA-ASI begins flight testing US Army's Improved Gray Eagle UAS

The aircraft, designed with internal research and development funding, evolves the legacy Gray Eagle to add performance improvements such as increased endurance from 25 to 48 hours. It carries more fuel and is powered by Heavy Fuel Engine-180 (HFE-180) that increases the platform's maximum gross take-off weight by 600 lb to 4,200 lb.

"MQ-1C ER is expected to complete flight testing in June 2017

UK investigators reveal further serious drone encounters

The encounter involved an Embraer 190 departing London City on 20 July. It had been conducting a right turn at 2,700ft when the first officer saw the apparent drone ahead and slightly above the jet.[...] The crew had estimated the separation as 30ft vertically and 20m horizontally.

                                        [...]

two weeks later, [...] the crew of an Airbus A320 in the Biggin holding stack for Heathrow identified a drone at 11,500ft some 20-40m from the aircraft. The board says the drone was “about the size of a football” with a flashing magenta light.
