Just finished updating New Zealand on my website. A little summary below:
from 1943 to 1946 NZ used a roundel with the red circle painted red and sidebars added. The fuselage roundel had a yellow outer circle!
from 1946 to 1957 the RAF roundel was used (again)
in the early 50s NZ wanted his own roundel and adopted a white vern in the red circle. Diagonally from low left to upper right.
in 1958 the white was changed to silver. (Legend has it that one of the driving reasons was that the white stenciled fern leave could be mistaken for a white feather- the symbol of cowardice!)
in 1970 the kiwi was chosen for the roundels as it is still used today. The kiwi is always facing forward!

Angola
the PC-7 was posted a few years ago in a small air force Topic.
it is Angola but I don't recognize the flag/finflash. Who has more Information? (period used, organization etc.)
The next pic is a Cuban MiG-21 in a movie about the Angola war. The finflash look like the one on the PC-7 but upside down.
I think the next picture is a new one here on the forum
Angola MiG-17. A drawing is here below
Are there any other pictures known with this roundel or the one on the PC-7? Would be great to see more of this.
Lots of questions about Angola but I sure hope someone has answers. For Roundels of the World: http://www.drareg.nl/Markeringen/index.html or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/481843655359127/

Ml Mi-8
An-2
and at least one other type, its fin seen behind the C-47's fuselage in this picture:
Just by looking at the serial numbers, and without doing any confirmation or cross-checking, my first guess is that the first batch(es) of the above mentioned types got the fin flash. But, why not all types operated in that same period of time (70s)? The Angolans had a lot of support from Cuba, mainly operating the above mentioned types. Could that be a reason, that the "Cuban-operated" aircraft wore the fin flash?
But then there's the PC-7 fleet also with the fin flash and a little younger than the above. Once more, the type was also operated by "foreigners"... Could there be a link of some kind? Would definitely be interesting to know for sure!Last edited by p_shadow; 14th July 2015, 04:54.
