It won't be beating anyone's plane, either European or South American, if Japan still maintains the same export policy on military or dual use hardware, that it has always maintained since the post war era.

BTW, strange looking thing isn't it - has a certain charm though.

indeed my Irish friend.

the paint on it reminds me of what Russians would do.

Nice looking airplane :D

Does anyone know the distance between the inlet lower lip and tarmac when the gear is compressed under load? Those big turbofans look like they could easily vacuum the ramp.

That's what happens if you feed a C-123 after midnight ...

Nice flaps, btw!
The engine mounts still look strange.
And the wing box cuts into the cargo space, does it?

I thought the front end looked a bit like a Provider - plenty of room for Agent Orange...

agreed, they do look awfully close to the ground. FOD would be real concern in all but the most well maintained airports. Forget trying to land it on a semi-prepared strip a la C17 or A400 Grizzly. That said, the specs I have seen suggested that it has pretty good short field performance (important for getting into the island airfields in the Japanese area of interest I suppose).

I think it has similar payload performance to the A400 but is faster and has better range. The baby C-17 notion is pretty apt except for the probable lack of tactical airfield performance. I think it may be pitched as a commercial mini-C17 similar to the BC17 concept a few years back. It would be an efficient air-lifter for any airforce that doesn't require delivery of loads directly into tactical strips.

From some angles the wing box produces a prominent hump which suggests that it doesn't in fact cut into the cargo volume too much.

Looks like about 1.7m. More than the prop tips on the outboard A400M engines, but definitely less than the F117s on the C-17. Then again I don't think rough field operations were a priority in this design anyway, the main landing gear suspension is very simple compared to designs like the An-70. Think 777 or Tu-154 bogie rather than independent suspension for each pair of wheels like this (A400M):

It does, but not by much it seems, similar to the A400M.

I think the major differences between this and the Airbus will be that the latter has better STOL and rough field capability while the Kawasaki has better payload/range.

second that, very pleasing lines. kind of reminds me of the A-6 intruder from the side.

This thread has a very silly title. Both "A400 beater" & 'beats KC-390' are ridiculous, the first for reasons which have already been stated, & the second - well, this is a project which began in 2001. The aircraft was rolled out in 2007, i.e. when the C-390 project began.

In other news, the Boeing 707 beat the A350! It flew years earlier! :diablo:

It is a military transport for Japanese airfields with very limited rough field capability. A bigger size replacement of the C-1A only.
