I think 1960 must have been one of the last, if not the last, good B of B exhibitions on Horse Guards Parade. Two Spitfire 1s, a Hurricane, a Mosquito, a Gladiator, etc., etc! The next year I visited was 1963 and all they had was a Vulcan nose (which I slept under). Photos herewith......

I'm guessing that the Tempest is the target tug in Milestones of Flight at Hendon ?

Nice old nostalga trip as well- thanks for sharing.

S1596 Supermarine S6B Science Museum

The S6B in the Science Museum is S1595.

The aircraft in the photographs is the S6A N248 incorrectly painted as S1596, N248 is now displayed at Solent Sky in Southampton.

That's right - it puzzled me for years!
I like the 1953 clip. There was another display at Horse Guards in the early 50s with more Luftwaffe types. I remember a friend showing me his photos of it.Perhaps he's out there somewhere on the forum???? Mousey, where are you?

Makes more sense now as I thought that the S6B was probably with the Science Museum at the time.

Thanks for the correction

Does anyone know any more about VV695 in that Pathe clip? Was it with the RAF Exhibition Flight?

Great to see the picture of Sedburgh XN148 - I flew in that on a number of occasions out of Tangmere whilst an Air Cadet in the late '60s. A nice memory to see the year out on. Thanks for posting it.

For a bit of fun I thought I would survey the amassed images of Spitfires that have been displayed in London for Battle of Britain commemoration.

Spitfires have been erected at Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall Gardens, Whitehall Embankment and very early on in Trafalgar Square.

I make no claim that the list is 100% accurate and certainly one of the photo agencies that supplied images is known to give estimated dates on occasion rather than no date at all.

I have a number of images with no date on the reverse but clearly by the local geography and fittings are in addition to those listed.

So who of the older posters, like myself, can add to or challange this database. :)

I wonder if this was an engineless wonder like F1 VF281 was that I remember being exhibited on Newcastle Town Moor in 1949. I don't believe it ever flew.

From ukserials.com

VF281 Vampire F1 d/d 11/09/1946, to Exhibition Airframe 05/04/1949, later scrapped

Possibly engineless when an exhibition airframe as it would be less to lift when assembling and dismantling and the engine could be put to good use
