    "Cobber Kain was 73's most split-arsed pilot. He often led a section 40 miles or more into Germany; regardless of the fact it was... against orders to cross the frontier.Paul Ritchie. Hurricane Ace. Flying Officer Edgar James "Cobber" Kain was a New Zealander who had joined the Royal Air Force and graduated as an RAF fighter pilot before war was declared. In the battle of France he was serving with 73 Squadron at Rouvres and had shown he was an absolute master of the Hurricane and 73 Squadron's most gifted pilot. In my painting, he fought an action with his section over Saurlautern on 26th March 1940 in which he downed two Bf109Es making his fourth and fifth victories and became the RAFs first fighter ace of the Second World War.

    Here too, he clashed with arguably Germany's greatest fighter pilot Hauptmann Werner Molders whose fighter's Chevron and triangle markings show him as Kommandeur lll/JG53. In this combat Molders was to shoot down Kain's Hurricane and wound the New Zealander in the left calf with shell splinters. Kain successfully baled out and returned to base in a French staff car. He returned to combat in France after hospital and achieved a tally of 17 aerial victories and the award of the DFC -the first of 73s fighter pilots to win the award, before he was tragically killed in a flying accident.

    That's about it folks. Apart from the wing stencil line to line in when fully dry, there is nothing more I can add to this Spitfire and its story. There are per...haps, a couple or so more Spitfires to add in support, as Johnny describes a typical fighter-patrol roster he so often led, and as a tribute to the incredible fighting spirit of the Royal Canadian Air Force Spitfire pilots who formed 144 and 127 Wings. Under Johnny Johnson's leadership.

    WING LEADER. (Rough draught).
    Oils on canvas. 24x36ins.
    High in the clouds above Normandy post D-Day, Wing Commander James Edgar ""Johnny" Johnson, flying his personal Spitfire lX MK392 JE-J and his wingman lead a combat air patrol of all-Canadian 144 Wing Spitfire IXs searching for Luftwaffe fighters while covering the Allied ground advance. Johnny Johnson was one of the greatest aces and most successful Wing Leaders of the Northwest European Theatre. From his initial combat service with 616 Sqn. flying the Spitfire 1a in December 1940 he proved himself a determined and courageous fighter pilot.

    His first victory was achieved flying a Spitfire lla shooting down a Bf109E over northern France on 26 June 1941. On several occasions at this period he flew as wingman to Douglas Bader. A year later, June 1942, his score stood at seven enemy destroyed one shared and was promoted to Squadron Leader taking command of 610 Sqn equipped with the Spitfire V. His promotion to Wing Commander in March 1943 saw him take command of his first all-Canadian unit, the Kenley Wing, flying the supremely beautiful and powerful Spitfire IX.

    Johnson was to prove especially adept with this marque of Spitfire for the remainder of his active combat service. Over the next 6 months a further 14 victories was added to his tally. In March 1944 he took command of 144 Wing comprised of 3 RCAF squadrons. He led this unit during the Normandy invasion and on into the first critical weeks of the campaign. His unit was the first to operate from a base on Normandy soil since Overlord began, at B3 Croix Sur Mer under his call sign 'Greycap Leader'. In August 1944 the wing disbanded and Johnson took over command of 127 Wing RCAF where he remained until early 1945. On 6 April 1945 he was promoted to Group Captain, commanding 127 Wing reformed with flying the Spitfire MkXlV. At war's end his total score stood at 34 enemy aircraft destroyed plus 7 shared destroyed and 5 probably destroyed. 1 shared destroyed on the ground.

    27 of Johnson's air-to-air kills were scored with the Spitfire Mk.lX and at least 12 of them are recorded with this Spitfire IX, MK392; making Johnson the top scoring British Spitfire pilot of the war. All but one of his tally (a Bf110) were single engine German fighters. After the war, Johnson remained in the Service and reached the rank of Air Vice Marshal, retiring from the RAF in 1966.

    His Spitfire IX MK392 brought Johnson his final Victory; a Bf109 over Rees during a sortie in the area of Arnhem. The 12th victory recorded for this fighter under Johnson's control. But later, while operating with 401 Sqn. she was involved in a crash and destroyed in the ensuing fire.

    Hi All,
    Yes he has always been very agreeable and kind when I have bought his prints and added Remarques, I did suggest a while back when contacting him he should paint his personal memory of escorting the SR-71 with another Jag (Ref his picture he published on his FB page). I think it would end up a stunning piece to add to his ever growing portfolio and of course the venerable B-52 he has to be in the top two or three in the world for his realism when painting modern aircraft.

    Just a top bloke to deal with full stop...

    I have brought a copy off Mike. XZ378 looks so much like XX741. Then again I went to Mikes lovely cottage, had a cup of tea, picked up my print and other stuff for something in the pipeline. BTW, the original was a comission for the owner of XZ378, a lovely man that has helped me with a massive donation for XX741 work.

    Plugging away at the little landscape details in the monochromatic underpainting. I am doing a good bit of 'rethinking' as I work vs my concept drawings ... I have to say that I'm having so much fun creating the scene from scratch that I will be doing more of these again. For fun, the original reference photo I shot in Colorado years ago is in the comments.

    I am occasionally questioned about putting so much work into what will eventually be 99% covered up. The answer is very simple - the goal is not to reproduce later every brush stroke in color. Rather, if I can bring this oil underpainting to a high finished - and well thought out, tweaked, and squinted and cussed at level it will serve at the master refined concept for the overlaid color layers. When finished, I'll photograph the underpainting at high res and have it handy on my Mac as I mix and apply colors. This is in addition to the obvious advantages of having a tonal foundation and context - and lovely mild layer of impasto - in place to serve the final layers.

    Now, I need a little help. It's 1918, we're at an airfield in France, and I want a small hand-painted sign in French at one point of the airfield boundary at canvas bottom right (note pencil pointing at the blank sign). Something short and quick in French referring to "Airfield - Keep Out," or something like that. Suggestions that won't sound like I pulled it off Google Translate?

    Thoughts on this pair of images ?

    First is a video of Simon Atacks latest creation - SKYTRAIN TO DESTINY., secondly Robert Taylors -"D-DAY DROP STICK". Is it fair to say that one is a panoramic piece and the other a close up ? In my opinion they complement each other but what do you all think ?

    Day.4. (Clearly even the best of us have off days Ref his comments below....

    Day four at Bentley Priory Museum and a much quieter day, giving me chance to start work on the rest of the 70+ aircraft. The concept is to show every squadron that took part in the Battle under Fighter Command. Clearly I didn't think this one through as I'm now faced with painting 70+ roundels! Tomorrow morning at 11am I'm doing a 45 minute talk which is open to all visitors. No idea what I'll be talking about yet, but this the boy who revised for his 'O' levels on the bus to school on the day of the exam.

    Return to Kimbolton

    Flying Fortresses of the 379th Bomb Group head home, escorted by P-51s of the 4th Fighter Group, following a 1944 mission into Germany. Based at Kimbolton, the 379th flew more sorties and dropped a greater bomb tonnage than any other group in the Mighty 8th Air Force. Carol Dawn, the lead plane in this painting, flew over 120 missions, the third highest of its group, before returning intact... to the U.S. after completing its tours of duty with multiple crews during the second World War. Four squadrons made up the 379th, including the 524th, 525th, 526th & 527th, and logged some of the most colorful and celebrated missions of any American heavy bomber unit.

    Alpine Eagles

    As the paratroopers of the101st Airborne tour the newly-liberated Eagles Nest, flyboys of the 325th Fighter Group, the famed Checkertail Clan, buzz past with a waveThe feeling in the air was electric when American troops reached Berchtesgaden, Germany in early May 1945. Once, these Alps were Flak Alley, but now the war in Europe is won and this storybook land is again a playground. Nazi Gemany... has finally surrendered, and the sound of gunfire has been replaced by the pop of champagne bottles. American pilots can now soar without looking over their shoulders. Victory is here. Originally commissioned as a companion drawing to accompany the print The Eagles Nest, published by Valor Studios in 2009, Alpine Eagles now comes to life as a colorful limited edition in print and custom oil-accented canvas.

    Well he's finished it another true masterpiece especially for the Jaguar connoisseur....

    From Michaels Facebook page 14/05. "THE LAST SORTIE OF JAGUAR XZ378" is now complete and with my printer for photography and proofing. The text and titling block has been endlessly edited but this is probably the final version: THE LAST SORTIE OF JAGUAR XZ378
    Jaguar GR1A XZ378 EP No.6 Sqn, RAF Coltishall, flew into retirement on 31 May 1990. The last sortie was flown by the artist as the Bounce on a 4-aircraft low level attack mission during which he earned his 2000 Hours+ Jaguar badge. Jaguar XZ378 is now in the Langdon Private Collection.

    Here is the finished painting with the beautiful Frinton Gallery handmade frame prepared for it.

    Jaguar Bounced SAP painting.

    This might have looked alright at first glance but it needed a lot of work to correct the errors in the drawing, and after a whole day in the studio it still needs a lot of work.
    Among other things.... The curve of the leading edge was wrong but has now been corrected. The leading edge slat has not yet been painted....
    The shape and angle of the chisel nose was way out but the probe was correct so I had something to use as a guide.
    The roundel is always difficult and very small changes make a big difference.
    The cockpit and windscreen are receiving treatment now but I have to leave it to dry off a little or it will all get very muddy and have to be scraped off.
    Here are some images that show the progression from "that looks about right" to "that is almost right". It is all about looking hard and carefully at the real aircraft and trusting your judgement..

    Already ordered my copy. However my one will be slightly different and Mike and I know why. The painting is a comission for a person that has an interest in Jagaur.
