Doesn't look like... this thread's been awfully quiet recently. I had such plans myself, but instead I've been busy making 3D models rather than artwork.

To give this thread a nudge, here's a clearer view of the RQ-180 images from last December, which I made for Aviation Week.

Plus a little tribute to the A6M Zero, which celebrated its 75th birthday this month:

Although still unfinished thought you might like to see this painting, especially with the date yesterday and today, it's a commission piece, can't wait to see it finished!Click image for larger version

Yes, I've commissioned it, the artist specialises in portraits, but this is something different to the work she usually does, so no others sadly.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day. Many aircraft were painted in black-and-white zebra stripes for the operations over Northern France in June 1944, including this one: P-51D-5-NA 44-13316 G4-C "MILDRED" of the 357th Fighter Group's 362nd Fighter Squadron, based at Leiston in the UK. This aircraft didn't actually fly on D-Day as it arrived at Leiston a few days too late. It was soon renamed "Nooky Booky II", one of four such named aircraft flown by famous ace pilot "Kit" Carson.

Gone a wee bit quire here? All gone to sleep? Common folks show us your latest works please!

I have no recent finished pieces (very busy making new models) but here are some more Mustang profiles meanwhile:

First a famous one, "Daddy's Girl", a P-51D-10-NA serial 44-14733 as flown by Ray S. Wetmore of the 370th FS/359th FG.

Next the aircraft flown by my friend Rene L. Burtner Jr., who sadly passed away earlier this year. It's P-51D-20-NA 44-72366 "Hubert" of the 369th FS/359th FG.

                            Hi All,
Ronnie would I be correct in assuming the design for the P-51 stays the same you change the skin for different renderings of individual aircraft or do you actually go through the process time after time to create these mini masterpieces ?

                            Geoff.

Hi Geoff, yes you are correct, I re-use the 3D model and merely change the skin, then re-render the image with the same camera/light setup.
Producing a 3D model is extremely time consuming (10x as much as a 2D illustration), but once it's there it can be used over and over. So it's great for bulk work, or many different angles, etc...
What I like best about 3D is the accuracy you can achieve. Not just accurate highlights, shadows and reflections, but once you model a plane in 3D you really get to know it. By comparing it against airshow photos, you can spot (many!) mistakes in scale drawings that aren't immediately obvious from a top or side view. But this process is time consuming. So once the model is complete the fun can begin and multiple images can be produced relatively quickly.

Though not really artwork, maybe of interest: a quick experiment with a blueprint-style isometric projection:

Without blueprint effects it looks like this:

Those who wonder why the left wing is so short... it isn't, it's the result of the projection, which is perspective-less. Hence "near" parts look smaller than "far" parts. They're actually identical, except the wings appear not equal due to the dihedral. More about iso projections here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_projection

And some snippets of the line drawing:

These are all created using the same 3D model that I created for the cover art, profile illustrations and line drawings for Osprey Publication's Ki-27 'Nate' Aces, by Nicholas Millman. For more artwork of the Ki-27, please see my website at http://digitalaviationart.com/skyraider3d/nate_1.htm or click any of the thumbnails below:

                                    Ronnie,
I saw this on your Facebook page matey excellent work as always matey keep up the good fight. I think the new Red Arrows print from Michael Rondot is the best I have ever seen he has captured the teams manoeuvres perfect.

Re #476. That is a 'Parallel Projection' as used in 3D modelling. Never heard of Isometric Projections, only Isometric Views. If you want something more weird., tale a look at something in a 2 Point Perspective

                                        Skyraider,Ronnie,
When you do your artwork do you have use a model from an equivalent view from a slr focal length..I think i remember something like 55 mm is close to natural eyesight rather than telephoto or wide angle lenses. This would affect the perspectives in your diagrams as well.

WOW that Michael Rondot painting is good- i wonder if it will be at the GaVa exhibition this week
