-Yes, $23,000 was a lot of money...and still is for some.
Back then the average income was something less than $5000 a year, so it was a good bit of money.

Yes, believe it or not, this was the price that the four Martin Mars firebombers were sold for in 1959 and they were due to be scrapped until rescued by Dan McIvor. Read some more fascinating history from Old Wings.
