    Hurricane / Spitfire Fuel Tanks

something struck me while i am thinking about my Hurricane Reserve Fuel tank ( the one between the pilot and engine) why is this tank covered in fabric and doped ? when the Top tank in a Spitfire is bare Aluminium painted and in the same position?

Spit one was under an armoured cover so didnt need a fuel proof covering?

Dawn patrol, it's actually a self sealing, rubberized coating and not 'fabric'.

Some spit ones were / are covered. Though some rebuilds do away with it as self sealing is not really required as no one is shooting at them

Easier to see leaks as well without the covering..

Thanks for your replies chaps, the Hurricane tank is a welded aluminium construction, where as the Spitfire top tank is riveted, i was just going by photos of recent rebuilds where all the Hurricane tanks are covered in red doped material, possibly a rubber coating as Maxim08 says.........

            cheers

            Julian.
