    Wellington X9989

Wellington 1C X9989 was destroyed after taking off from RAF Harwell 25.10.1941 on a ferry flight to Gibralter. The crew perished except for Sgt Douglas Anderson Air Gunner RCAF R / 70453 who lingered for a month before also passing. This was due to a hydraulic failure.

Question, can anyone help me with a first flight date and construction location for X9989, please.

According to 'Vickers Aircraft since 1908' (Andrews and Morgan, Putnam) X9989 was part of an order for 710 Mk Ic Wellingtons from Chester under contract 124362/40. Only 378 Mk Ic Wellingtons were built under this order, registered as X9600 to Z1181. All delivered initially to Maintenance Units between 10 May 1941 and 28 May 1942.

ARCHER Many thanks for that information. It neatly closes a couple of questions about that accident.
