    Spitfire dragged from Thames 1951-2

Information wanted about a Spitfire which was caught in fishing nets and came ashore at Gas works jetty Southend-on-sea 1951-52. The engine was the most complete part and was stripped by the fitters in the gas works. I learnt from my father that the fishermen had to return to land with the wreck in order to claim compensation for damage to nets etc. I still have small parts of the Merlin.

You'll be needing the 'Southend Standard' weekly newspaper - damned heavy bag on a Thursday!

Now that sounds like the plaintive cry of a former paper boy ..... !
