-RE: mascots
Alot of squadrons of all the nationalities certainly picked up some wierd and wonderful creatures as personal pets or mascots. Everything from ducks to snakes were known to be kept by allied squadrons and personnel. The German ace Franz Von Werra even had a pet Lion cub named Simba!
As for the UK-based American squadrons,it somehow seems doubtful that something as large as a cougar/puma could go unnoticed by authority, although I suppose it could have been smuggled in as a cub.It is certainly an interesting thought!Let us know how you get on :)

Does anyone know if some US squadrons based in Britain during the war kept cougars (puma) as mascots.
I am studying current sightings of Big Cats and one possible origin is that they were mascots which either escaped or were released into the wild.
