Whatever happened to the Lindsey Waltons’s Corsair? That was lovely in Aeronavale colours.

On Facebook it has been stated that it was 16 years since the French-based F4U-5 had last flown, and it has taken 10 years of work to get it to this point. Of course this comes just ahead of the La Ferte-Alais airshow next weekend as well (May 19th and 20th).

With F-AZEG now flying, the total number of currently flyable/active Corsairs in the world stands at 29 (with quite a number more under restoration to fly):

F4U-1A (N83782) - Planes of Fame Air Museum
FG-1D (N700G) - Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum
FG-1D (N773RD) - Mid America Flight Museum
FG-1D (N11Y) - Chuck Wentworth
FG-1D (N83JC) - Ronald Lauder
FG-1D (N46RL) - Jerry Yagen/Military Aviation Museum
FG-1D (N72NW) - Olympic Flight Museum
FG-1D (C-GVMC) - Vintage Wings of Canada
FG-1D (N29VF) - Rod Lewis/Lewis Air Legends
FG-1D (G-FGID) - The Fighter Collection
FG-1D (ZK-COR) - Old Stick & Rudder Co.
FG-1D (N43FG) - Louis Horschel
FG-1D (N209TW) - Texas Flying Legends Museum
FG-1D (N451FG) - Cavanaugh Flight Museum
FG-1D (N9964Z) - Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing
F4U-4 (N4TF) - Dan Friedkin/Comanche Fighters
F4U-4 (N240CF) - Trent Latshaw
F4U-4 (N72378) - Beck/Ehlen/Wings of the North
F4U-4 (N713JT) - Jim Tobul
F4U-4 (OE-EAS) - Red Bull
F4U-5 (D-FCOR) - MaxAlpha Aviation
F4U-5 (F-AZEG) - Amicale Jean Baptiste Salis
F4U-5 (N45NL) - Collings Foundation
F4U-5 (N43RW) - Lone Star Flight Museum
F4U-5 (N179PT) - Fighters & Legends Museum
F4U-5 (N494M) - Michael George
F4U-7 (N1337A) - Erickson Aircraft Collection
F4U-7 (N965CV) - John O'Connor
F2G (N5588N) - Lawrence Classics

The former Lindsey Walton F4U-7, which is now owned and regularly flown by the Erickson Aircraft Collection based at Madras, Oregon (formerly based at Tillamook), was just recently repainted this year to honor Korean War US Navy pilot Jesse Brown, representing an F4U-4B. Wonder if there is any particular reason why all the airworthy -1 Corsairs are Goodyear built airframes?

Might be the same reason that most of the surviving B-17s were built at the same factory as well. Corrosion protection?

Many of the 1945 Goodyear-built airframes didn't see wartime service. It would be interesting to map the airworthy FG-1Ds to their production dates.

Edit:
