SEAC P-51s: where were they going to?

At the end of the Burma campaign, the RAF were disbanding fighter squadrons whilst P-51s were being delivered. What was the intentions for these aircraft? Were, as I suspect, they going to replace the P-47 as long-range fighters and fighter-bombers? Or were they going to supplement the Spitfire Mk.14/18s and Tempest Mk.IIs taking over the Spitfire Mk VIII units? Were the units disbanded because of an overall run-down in the theatre, or were they potential P-51 units superseded by events?
