BCWM's Jaguar GR.1 Roll-Out

    Further update: The starboard slat drive system has been restored and Slat rollers restored to working condition and lubricated. The Starboard slat works a treat with no adjustment and the port now rolls on its tracks as well (not perfectly but well enough for our uses (we hope). A bit of wire locking and a couple of items to sort and we will stick the slats on and see if we can get the heavily disturbed hydraulics to work. Flap system just needs the port outer flap screw jacks and shafts to be installed and the flap rollers / tracks checked out and flaps set up. We also have a delivery of some rare and very welcome components that will finish the airframe externally and allow progress towards a running frame.

      Good luck with those tanks Al. Phenolic composites do become porous after a few years being dry. I have had enough experience of leaky tanks on a/c (Lightnings, Hunters, Buccaneers, Jags & Victors), not all of them phenolic!

        Not sure Al, but I seem to recall that there is some asbestos content in the tanks so be careful when restoring the surface finish

            We are well aware of the health and safety implications of those tanks. They will never carry fuel again and the guys who will be painting them up will not be rubbing them down to matrix and any cracked or chipped areas of existing paint will be filled. Only tanks going to see any fuel is the F1 and the N Tanks. They will be the ones, I will have most concern about leaks. The pressure refuelling system will not be used either.

              Is there fuel residue in the tanks? Normally an empty tank has enough fuel in to keep the tank safe from exploding and to ensure the thiokol (PRC) remains good. Otherwise a visual inspection of the faying areas on the inside would be worth a go, checking for loose sealant.

                A slight word of caution, a tank with a residue of fuel is more explosive than a full one due to the fuel/air vapour mix. That's why they fill tanks with explosive suppressant foam to reduce the explosivity.

                  Actually as I said, the amount of fuel left in an empty tank was normally an amount required to make the air/fuel ratio rich extinct. Too much to catch fire. Explosion suppression measures would be required if you drain the tanks lower than their normal empty level, that or drain it until the ratio is lean extinct.

                    The F4 tanks will be totally dry and totally sealed off from the rest of the system. Because engines that are not airworthy will be running underneath it. Uncontained engine failure has killed a few Jags with the massive reservoir of fuel raining down on to a disintegrating engine. Wings and the centre group do not need fuel in them for our purpose so won't have fuel in them either. Fuel pumps will be isolated too.

                      I believe one of the first uncontained failures (turbine disc) was caused by mis-matching the NGV's during a rebuild in RAFG.
                      Isolating the pumps is a good move but can you also blank off the feeds to the galleries?

                        No reason why not. Blanks in the flexirac couplings and sealant would close the gallery lines not required. Only need Fuel in F1, the N Tanks and the feed lines to the engines.

                            Many thanks for the on going update must ask though apart from the Jaguar being the obvious star on H2 was that yourself the presenter of Defenders Of The Sky was talking to alongside the Jaguar ?

                                  The starboard side just needs some connections locking up and the outer flaps need to be set up to the correct position. Slat rollers on one side need relocking and if completed this weekend, work on rebuilding the Spoiler powered circuits with parts that have been donated to us, can also be started. Other areas being worked is the installation of pitot head mast P/S tubing and completion of the keel bay with fitting of TGT amps and HEIUs. Defo power off time.

                                      Some more images of work progressed. Graham has sorted the last centralized warning issue with the rectification of the No 1 engine fire detection circuits that were not working under CWP test. A bit of plug cleaning fortunately proved to fix the snag. Also Graham has repaired the stick top loom to fix up to our old SAMM 210-52 original Jaguar top (very long modified out of RAF use). We hope that trim, PTT and NWS will be working OK.
