did you bother taking a photo of the car in shot 2 or was that the only reason you were hanging around?, you have got no interest in cars or aviation at all i bet ha ha.

i love it when people put old aero engines in cars, wonder what mpg it does?

Rear engined?!

"Take the magneto out of my stomach,
And the butterfly valve off my neck,
Extract from my liver the crankshaft,
There are lots of good parts in this wreck"

"Take the manifold out of my larynx,
And the cylinders out of my brain,
Take the piston rods out of my kidneys,
And assemble the engine again."

(Nice slot-mags! :))

Oh and if it´s huge Fiat engines you want, then there was this, the S.76, with a 28.3 litre four cylinder.

xtm,

I am sure the second car was Merlin powered. I understood it was built, in part, as a response to the claims being made by John Dodds re the Meteor powered first machine.

Correct. It was an ex-Argonaut 600 or 700 series Merlin.

Edit: It was a Merlin 724-1C (apparently) from Argonaut G-ALHI

A recent edition of Top Gear had a BMW 'Brutus' - 46 ltr V12.

I´ve stood right next to Brutus when it was started. LOUD!
Not sure whats with the BS story about being built by BMW in 1925 though. Not true at all.

I thought it was a BMW V1 engine, in which case that could well be true.

Sorry, I wasn´t clear. The motor is definitely vintage BMW, but the car was built in the last decade or so by the owner.

I was hoping for a more thorough examination of certain aspects of photo #2... What on earth are all of these large engines doing in this thread!?

There used to be another one like that. It was a Meteor-powered Phantom II built in Switzerland, and on it`s website they claimed it was a one-off built by Rolls-Royce in the 1920s or 30s with a Merlin engine...highly unlikely.

I´ve seen the owner of Brutus on YouTube talking about how he built it, so it´s most likely just Top Gear getting the wrong end of the stick.

That was her best angle, she had a face like a dropped pie :(

The car was fairly quiet, I was across the street & didn't hear it leave...
