Reading through this thread, I note a number of references of a future for No.4 Squadron. For the record this particular Unit is now the Hawk T.2 squadron at RAF Valley, having taken over from No.208 Squadron, which has been disbanded.

Added later on 'edit': My apologies for duff info. I know perfectly well it was 19 Sqdn that disbanded to make way for No.4 Sqdn - but typed rubbish instead. Quickly and rightly pointed out by 'Stacey24b', to whom thanks.

I think you'll find 19 sqn disbanded to form 4 , not 208 as they are still flying

and 1 sqn will be 4th typhoon sqn not JSF

        Squadron Silver

I know next to nothing about squadron dispositions and histories etc., so can't add much to the thread, but, just to pick up on a point made by Resmoroh in post #5, what does happen to all of the silver on disbandment of a squadron?

An old pilot friend of mine recalled his days in the mess at Wittering at the very end of WW2 and said there was a room stuffed full of it. Where is it now, does it really just go to be melted down?

        Anon.

I remember asking about that at Mawgan once, the answer I got was that anything deemed historically of value to a station, squadron, or unit would be given to, and stored by the AHB - whether it's true or not...

It all used to go to a place called Quedgeley, but I think that is a housing estate now. Orificers swords used to be held there as well and I know they went to Innsworth when Quedgeley shut, Innsworth is now some Army barracks with everything moved to High Wycombe so I kinda guess that is where it all ended up?
It is fine to want to soar with the eagles. However, weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

No. 1 Balloon Company, Royal engineers are to reform in their centenary year:

It says the official Stand Up will be at what may be the last Leuchars Airshow, which has to be the most bittersweet of double edged swords.

One squadron are reforming at Leuchars with Tiffies

Though to be fair 3 Sqn was the 1st Sqn in the RAF, so cannot see the big thing about 1 Sqn.....

But you haven't served with them twice, Tony?

And isn't there something about a/c types? I'm not fully conversant with the niceties.

                  = Tim

                  PS - much pleased!!

My main squadrons I served on we're 240 OCU, 20 Sqn, 14 Sqn... And happy to see 20 Sqn is not on the list of active squadrons.

Bar a couple of months on 431 MU doing deepstrip which was a bit of a holding posting before tour ex in RAFG my whole career was first line, could also add LSS which was the VC 10 line for 10 Sqn.... Nearly ended up in base hangar after a course, but my F/Sgt kicked up a stink and got me posted back....
