I am sorry but I didn't think the first clip was funny. To quote from other shows I think it's "too soon", even though its been 60 odd years. But I must admit I did laugh at Ello Ello which I believe the French didn't appreciate, so now I can appreciate their point of view. Although ello ello was more farce based, similar to Dad's Army, which when that was first shown I thought it was a bit silly. Now I can see it as a gentle mickie take on pomposity. Back to the original clip I have given the show a few looks at, to see if it's improved, but never watched a whole show. I think I can see why it could be funny but can't help thinking they missed the point. But to be honest I feel that about nearly all the comedy shows, it's almost like they no not what they are getting laughs from.

Laugh? I thought I'd never start (and I didn't.) Mocking the memory of men who were prepared to die for this country is all too prevalent these days, and, of course, four-letter words make it soooooo much funnier; it seems somehow apt that Armstrong is now best known for taking part in a programme named Pointless.

Oh yes - a classic. NTNON is a much missed and rather underrated series I think. Thanks for the link!;)

Ah yes 78s, I remember them well! And Garrard 301 with good old Mallard valve amps. For sound quality you cannot beat analogue. Bit difficult to get in your pocket though.

The mention of 'Allo 'Allo brought to mind the comment made by a gentleman a good many years ago (not long after the show first aired). He said that compared with the resistance people who facilitated his return to the UK, the resistance characters in the show actually looked proficient.

Thinking out loud here. I wonder how many forumites would defend Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson et al with the argument that comedians should be able to touch upon any subject and that no individual or group should be offered special protection, but that joking about WW2 airmen is disrespectful and 'too soon'.

I would suggest that if you find the Mitchell and Webb sketch offensive then you are weak minded, too readily offended and need to get over it, and get over WW2, in much the same way that women, homosexuals and non-caucasians need to learn to take it on the chin from such masters of their craft as Davidson and Manning. :o

Any more of this sort of chat and I will start whining about 'censorship' and 'Big Brother', as many of the defenders of Manning and Davidson do. You cannot even joke about WW2 airmen any more without some whiner with no sense of humour trying to silence you...

One cannot have it both ways. Note that I haven't expressed my own opinion on Mitchell and Webb as it is somewhat irrelevant.

I've watched that episode in the company of Germans and they rather liked it. It is ancient history to them.

'Allo 'Allo was popular with some of the German population too, Video of the night's episode got me a few free beers in the local.

Humour is a very subjective emotion in the sense being discussed here. And what is rib-ticklingly funny to one will leave another unmoved. Finding humour in oppression and misfortune and making fun of minorities goes back to the Greeks and it is guaranteed that someone somewhere will be offended by it sometime. From Aristophanes all the way to Spike Milligan, Benny Hill, Lenny Bruce, Hicks, Monty Python and Russell Brand some people will have been offended but the majority have laughed. That's all that matters.
