-I don't see an issue with their clothing, it should be as smart as possible, whilst remaining practical to wear. Better to wear a stab vest than to get stabbed :)
I also don't think society is "bad" today either, compared to the past generations.

-That's not an antistab vest, on the majority of the police today it is a corset, they take them off and their guts drop down past their waists

-The uniform has changed alot over the years to be more comfortable and practical. From what I recall from my assessment a month ago, the officer mentioned that they now wear T-shirts instead of shirts as it's more practical. They also changed the trousers too, again to be more practical.
They still have the nice trousers, shirts, ties etc for special occasions though.

-Having read this thread, I agree with most comments. But, it's got s*d all to do with todays society, It's down to self respect, and I will argue that with anyone all day, every day.
Example/s. I have been retired 18 yrs, prior to that, I served 30 yrs on the Force. One car I drove was an Austin Westminster, come Winter, we had to submit a report asking for the car heater to be swithed back on, because it had been switched off for Summer. If you were seen NOT wearing your helmet or cap, expect a Boll***g from your Ch/Insp. Also, you could not be seen carrying a parcel or bag whilst on the beat.
YOU were responsible for you car, it was YOUR car, after patrol, you washed and cleaned it.
If it were a sweltering hot day, permission was given by Ops room to remove your ties.
No one would ever dream of turning up on duty without knife edged creases in your trousers.
No, it's all gone now, I see 6.7.8. cars next door to me, they never move.
I am sorry to see the present day Officers of my old Force, looking scruffy, unkempt, obese to the point of never being able to chase and catch anyone, cars, that are filthy, when even a quick wash down would make the world of difference.
I say this. Put them ALL, from the top, ie the Chief Constable down on a two yearly contract, if you dont measure up, your out, no ifs or buts.
I also believe in Zero tollerance.
Respect is NOT a God given gift, you have to earn it.
Jim.

Exactly as you say! They mirror the society from which they're drawn. Look around you. Our town centers are full of fat, scruffy, ill mannered oiks aka Police.

-JG, In our Town Centre, only members of the public are seen. I honestly cannot say when the last time I ever saw an Officer walking the beat, perchance it's because my Town is reknowned for being an "Elderly persons"
Town, so perhaps the Officers are frightened about being beaten up by Pensioners, caught shoplifting

-Well I live about a mile away from the Motorway Police Headquarters at Almondsbury.(Blackrats as they are affectionately called) I see them most days at our local Tesco Metro buying shopping. First their vehicles. They are BMW 3 series estates both marked and unmarked all new and immaculately clean they also drive X5's The latest one I have seen is a black3 series estate with blacked out windows which looks like a firearms vehicle again new and would do credit to a drugs dealer! If you are on the M5/M4 interchange look out for a silver grey Skoda with lots of aerials poking out the roof and take your foot off the gas! Next the officers. What can I say about this lot. Let me start at the top and work down. Head shaved,Raybans even if its raining perpetual scowl. Tshirt, stab proof vest at least two radios, belt kit with lots of jolly useful bits dangling off it. Combat trousers with lots of pockets.Glock Pistol and nice big combat boots(usually in need of a clean.
"Tip of the day" Do not approach these people as it is beneath them to have a conversation or pass the time of day with them.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary slogan
‘working together to make the community of Avon and Somerset feel safe and be safe’.
Yeh Right!
They even screwed up there!

-Paul. I think the Newspaper article was good, it just proves that what you see you DON'T get, a load of kidology.
As regards the cars being clean, I bet you a fiver, the Force has it's own car washing machine, we did, until cutbacks, it was dismantled and sold off.
As regards the shaved heads, we had a prat from Essex transfer to our Force, he had his hair so short he looked about bald, he stated it made him look "Hard" yer, hard from the neck up:rolleyes: That started a new trend which I avoided.
They try and look like Nazi stormtroopers, dressed all in black, which I think is intimidation at it's worst.
I also think from watching the odd TV prog when T.V. crews go out with them, they, the Police are far too heavy handed, 6 men jump on some drunk kid, when one Copper alone could easily have done the arrest himself.
Would I join the Police again?.
Not, as they say, for all the tea in China. They have lost any respect the public once had for them.

-I thought they had their hair cut short or go bald because they deal with all people from those with good hygiene to those with.... head lice?
I notice the stab proof vest has been mentioned a few times. I always thought that was a good addition to the uniform really as it helps with safety. A friend of mine had a few colleagues that were stabbed few months ago and I would take a guess that without the stab proof vest they would probably be dead.

"Officers also identified more than 150 parked vehicles that had been left unsecured and their owners have been "given advice".
So which members of Plod got this dangerous job?:D

-Paul, WOW, whats the CC do that for, a Knighthood?
Seriously though, it just goes to show what can be done, and if one Force can do it, then so can others, this would be a good incentive to do what I suggested earlier, put all from C.C. down, on a 2 yearly contract.
I bet you would see far more Ops like that carried out, knowing their job depended on perfomance related results.;)

-Jim If the Criminal Protection Service would take a chance or two and start prosecuting some lawbreakers and the Judiciary would send them down I would be a much less Grumpy old sod.
I would like to see this exercise repeated on a regular basis in my area instead of bums on seats in Police Stations. Still it is a start so I must not be to mean spirited about it.

-Again another thread knocking the Police.
Maybe some of you should ask to go out with these 'scruffy oiks' for a night, walk a mile in their shoes and all that.
Lincoln 7, when you served, the world was a different place. I wonder how many crack addicts with HIV you had to deal with.
But coppers doing their job never makes the news so why should I be suprised that an ill-informed few pounce on the things that go wrong and critisize people doing a job that they themselves are incapable of doing.
After twenty-three years, this sort of thing shouldn't bother me anymore but everyone has a breaking point.
Don't worry, I won't be checking this thread again.

Walk a mile in their shoes? Fat chance of them walking anywhere in this country. Not checking the thread again? I am heartbroken now. He must be a copper(no sense of humour rather what I was alluding to in a previous post in this thread)

-I wasn't knocking the police. I like them and understand they are in a difficult position, especially when they deal with cuts from the govt etc
As you say, they rarely get highlighted for doing good things, only bad.
A few nights ago the police shut down an illegal rave in MK and had all kinds of things thrown at them. There are not many jobs where you expect that sort of treatment.
It's not an easy job. Unfortunately society and the job of a police officer has changed in many ways. Society changes and the police service has to addapt.
Sat2, given your location, am I right in assuming you're a mountie? :)

Sat2. I was shot in my left side with a 9mm, I was, at another time stabbed again in my left hand side. On nights, I covered 300 square miles, single crewed, Backup?, whats that. Get real and get a life pal, your Coppers have it easy.Crack, H.I.V.? Where or what planet have you been living on, Of course it was around when I was on the job, just as your Vietnam Boys were on drugs. No doubt you have only got a selective mind.
Not coming back here, well, I shan't miss you, don't knock it until you have done it.
And if, and I doubt it, you are a Copper, how with such an attitude problem have you lasted so long?.Oh Yes, I forgot to mention, I did spend a whole night out with a Sgt Tim Mc Laughlin of the CHP in San Diego, did we walk anywhere, did we hell as like, we were in an unmarked 7ltr souped up persuit car. No one walked the streets of San Diego after dark.

No, I quite agree Paul, a complete overhaul of our Judiciary system is needed, I mean, and I CAN say this, but many of them are too old, and out of touch with the real world, as I have said some time ago, one even dropped off to sleep during a Trial, imagine what that cost for a start, then have to have a re Trial. I watched Martin Clunes on TV last night, and he was on Gurnsey or Sark, the local Coppers official Police car was.....a tractor, as no cars are allowed. One crime he mentioned carried a Custodial sentance of 14 yrs, the same offence on the mainland, (Here) carried 7. I think it may have been drug smuggling via boats. We are the softest touch in the world. It would be interesting to know the total crimes committed in the U.K. and compare it with a similar Country.

Paul. I have mentioned in some other Post, when I was serving, I actualy saw a memo stating that the C.P.S. had been ordered by the Home Office to "Lose" 17% of all submitted cases, hence, "Not in the public interest" we often hear.

I was thinking the other day !! What has happened to the very smart , respected British Policeman ??
My local Police seem to be 16 yr old spotty youths , dressed half from an ill fitting bus drivers out- fit, half from help the aged & a High-viz of dubious origin !!
Their vehicles comprise a fleet of ageing Ford Focus Mk1 estate cars , rather dirty with the reflective spandex peeling off !!
These cars appear to be driven by 12 yr old schoolgirls with pony tails .
I'm getting old ..........
