In May this year a hang glider was towed by a microlight very close to the summit of Mount Everest. As he flew over at an altitude of around 30,000 feet, Richard Meredith-Hardy, the microlight pilot, was able to exchange waves with a group of climbers standing on the summit.
The lecture will describe the many technical and other preparations for the attempt, from equipment to meteorology, and will then go on to describe the actual flight. The lecture will be of interest to a wide audience of engineers, aviators, those seeking adventure of any description and, not forgetting, mountain climbers.

Richard Meredith-Hardy has been flying microlight aircraft for the past twenty years, making many innovative and record breaking flights. He has been involved in the organisation of many worldwide microlighting events, culminating this year in the ‘Over Everest’ flight, which is the subject of this lecture.
His achievements include flights from one end of the UK to the other and a 10,000 mile expedition from London to South Africa, which included the first attempt to fly over Mount Kilamanjaro, reaching 18,100 feet. He has also been involved in several filming expeditions in Africa, Europe and USA. He was World Microlight Champion in 1990 and set three FAI world speed records in 1991, one of which still stands today.
Richard has served on the BMAA council, as secretary of the Association of Microlight Professionals, has been competition Director of four World Championships and has been the UK delegate to the FAI microlight committee (CIMA) since 1998. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Aero Club in 2002 for ‘outstanding achievement in aviation’.
