You may start off incredibly wealthy, but flying soon reduces you to the breadline.

Have any of you ever met her? Unfortunately I haven't, though a friend, when she worked as a child-minder, often did, as she had to look after Carol's daughter. She says that, when she came to collect her daughter, she was just another "Mum," with no side about her whatsoever, so maybe we shouldn't always go by the public face?

          I say.

I don't actually have a lifestyle. Just a meagre existence in which everything is devoted to feeding the ever hungry mouths dependent on me, the aircraft, the LAA, the Norfolk Gliding Club, my engineer / inspector, Transair, the fuel companies and the airports that charge landing fees.

*Sigh* Dry toast for tea again.

Perhaps in the UK, I've never heard of her.

Best wishes to her, hopefully she'll build up experience before she goes...and remember hours are not necessarily the same as experience.

                Pocket biog:

Attractive young lady ('Young' rather depends where you stand) who came to public notice using her maths skills as part of the studio team on a daytime quiz show.

Has been through a makeover or two and veered toward 'celebrity' but managed to swerve away from the worst implications of that word.

                Found an ex-Red Arrows boyfriend.

                Took up flying

First solo broadcast live on tele.

                I find her likeable.

As I understand, she's planning to get her CPL and IR first, although there's not much alternative to having an IR as most choices of route will have sections where you won't get a VFR cleasrance.

If you take Polly Vacher as an example. She learnt to fly fairly late in life albeit much under the tutelage of the legendary late Peter Thorn and subsequently set out on 3 round the world trips in her Piper Dakota. It involves a bit of risk, a lot of money and determination, but most of the flying is hours of straight and level with not much to do.

                                  Good luck to her!

Many, if not most adventurers thoughout history could be classed as "mad"

If she is qualified I don't see the problem. As long as she sticks to the rules that she has proved she understand to get her licence, she should be OK

The licence says she can do it. Lack of experience just means she has to think a bit more and take a little more time studying and planning before each sector as much will be a new experience.

Humans would never have progressed without the "mad" element.

My personal impression is that she is nowhere near being crazy, she has a well developed sense of adventure and a young outlook on life. Fair play to her and I wish her well in this venture. As has been said before it could lead to a TV series of the flight, I certainly hope so and look forward to seeing it.

I've often thought about flying from Australia back to the UK but have decided the maddest part about it is going through all the paper work first.
Visa's for this country, visa's for that country, back ground checks from every country you're going to cross, approvals for taking a **** etc etc. One would be mad before they've left the ground. I wish her good luck and even if she fails, at least she's tried. If she succeeds, she's got a story to dine out on for the rest of her life.

I also tought about flying to Australia one day...I had no idea it is that hard.

How high would you have to fly to be considered no longer in someones air space...80 km...or above Karman line 100 km ?
