Swiss took to the skies yesterday providing Switzerland with an international carrier following the failure of its former flagship, Swissair. The Swiss government, banks and private investors have injected funds of around USD$1.56 billion to get the project off the ground.
Although its operations will be 30 percent smaller than those of Swissair, the fledgling airline will still fly to 123 destinations in 60 countries. It has also announced it is to modernize its fleet by ordering 13 Airbus A340-300 planes to replace MD-11s taken from Swissair.
The new carrier has formed a partnership with American Airlines, giving it more access to the United States, and says it hopes to become a full member of the oneworld alliance by next winter.

RE: Swiss Airlines has an easter take-Off

My understanding of the A340-300 situation is, that they downgraded Swissair's existing A340-600 order, which had beeen due to replace the MD-11's in a few years, anyway.

Incidentally, the Swiss Website is now online at www.swiss.com
