A New Name For BA ?

British Airways is expected to consolidate its non-Heathrow short-haul operations under a new name by the end of the year.

Although the airline refused to reveal exact details, industry insiders have said the carrier wants to merge its CitiExpress and Gatwick short-haul business under a new brand, mooted to be BA Regional Europe.

A senior BA spokesman described short-haul operations as significantly loss-making and said it is considering changes to CitiExpress via a review that will run until the end of the year.

Weve finished our Gatwick short-haul review, which began 12 to 18 months ago, because the market is constantly changing and this has meant weve had to go back and look at some previous options again, he said.

BA operates short-haul flights under three divisions: CitiExpress; Gatwick; and Heathrow. CitiExpress is a wholly owned subsidiary and operates within the UK and Europe. Meanwhile, BA has resumed limited catering on Heathrow flights to Spain, Portugal, Italy and Finland, more than two months after in-flight catering stopped when its supplier Gate Gourmet sacked 670 workers.

Well Heathrow Airways could be called British Airways Heathrow (BAH) and the regional (how patronising) service could be called Handling Unions Mainly By Undermining Generals (HUMBUG)

Whenever the two airlines wish to reconsolidate you just add the two names together BAH HUMBUG !

ALternatively should they wish to press ahead with British Airways Regional Europe (BARE) then the Heathrow business should be rebranded Big Ugly Machines Serving (BUMS).

            BARE BUMS anyone ???

So these are essentially three different products all doing the same thing?

Also, who are BA's competitors on these routes? Is it mainline carriers such as SAS, Air France or Lufthansa that are eating away at their profits, or is it low cost carriers (clearly not the case at LHR)? Or, are BA suffering because people have lost faith in the brand within Europe? Do Europeans prefer to travel on their own carriers to Britain from Europe? Thus changing the brand name...

And, should the One World partnership not be feeding into BA's European network? I really think that the Star Alliance does this very well.

Well perhaps BA might set up another low cost airline of their own, well their last one was a huge success, 35 million investment (might even of been 25 Million) and sold it for 325 Million a few years later, I think this would be quite good and interesting to see as they fly to a wide range of destinations from GTW which LCCs don't, i.e. into Albania (whatever the capital is again) or reykjavik to name but a few.

They already do, and as an LCC route this could prove very profitable if you ask me, no competition from and LCC what so ever

Its fine Tom, it would be great to see a huge LCC with such a huge diverese network but this is unlikely, can they not just axe the unprofitable routes?

I think the name CitiExpress should be retained - it's much snappier than BA Regional Europe, which is a bit of a mouthful! (And BARE doesn't look good as initials!)
2009 - the first year without any flights, the first year I lost a holiday, the first and last year I book the bloody Eurostar

Personally I dont think a new name is a good idea. People book a "BA" flight on BA.com. The majority of people aren't really aware of whether its LHR or LGW, and they certainly arent aware if its BA or BACX or GB or Loganair or BMed. Lots of people dont even realise they are flying on a completely different airline when using a codeshare service!

Rebranding is going to remove that huge homogenous brand that means regular BA pax can use BACX without realising they are on a totally different company.
