Translated from Dutch:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Maxjet Airways is a new American low cost carrier that wants to start transatlantic flights later this year. The airline is awaiting permission from the Federal Aviation Administration, but already has a leased B767-200ER seating 217*. The flights are promised to be 15 to 70 percent lower than with the traditional airlines.

Maxjet Airways was until recently known as SkyLink Airways, but changed their name because of the similarity with Canadian airilne Skylink Aviation. At the mean time Maxjet employs a hundred employees.

Maxjet intends to fly from the airports of Baltimore-Washington and New York JFK. The only destination, for now, will be London Stansted.

How long it will take the FAA to give the green light is not known yet. The ministry of transport however has already given their permission for flights to various European countries. These countries include Belgium and the Netherlands. Charter flights are also planned.

Maxjet CEO and part-owner Joshua B. Marks declined to comment to the Washington Post how many planes are to be used. According to him Maxjet will announce the routes and prices later this summer. According to the website of the airline they will have the lowest available prices on the market. Moreover, those low prices can always be booked, even when booking last minute.

*Luchtvaartnieuws is saying 217 passengers, Maxjet.com is saying 205

Visit http://www.maxjet.com/ for more information.

Judging from the colours on the tail and what little can be seen on the website the plane will be ex-Excel airways.

Surprised we haven't heard of this before.

Washington and New York to London Stansted could probably work, but I get the feeling this might be another airline that never actually starts up, a lot like that Canadian airline that promised direct 757 flights to Canada from London Stansted only last year.

A summary of another story on this airline, but now from the Washinton Post. The full article can be found here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/27/AR2005062701754.html?sub=new but a (free) subscription is required.

A 19-month-old Northern Virginia company that planned to launch service this spring [...] is still parked at the gate, awaiting final approval from the federal government.

[Maxjet] set its sights on flying to Britain from Baltimore-Washington International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport sometime this fall.

Maxjet has received initial approval from the Transportation Department, which evaluates the economic health of prospective airlines, to fly to Britain and 14 other countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Chile and Taiwan -- destinations the airline has announced no immediate plans to serve.

But the company is awaiting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, which focuses on safety issues. [...] "I would stress that the issues that have to be worked out are not at all unusual."

"We expect to complete FAA certification in the near future," Marks said yesterday.

Well this definitely looks the furthest one of these start-ups has got, as they actually appear to own a plane. Still waiting for more news on Eos airlines... http://www.eosairlines.com/index.html

A route to the East coast would definitely work, it is where STN is severely lacking. There are hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions) living in the Herts, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk areas of the South-East that would use a route to the East coast from STN, rather than taking on the pretty ridiculous transport system to get them accross London to LHR of LGW.

Canadian airline that promised direct 757 flights to Canada from London Stansted only last year.

Can you remember who this was? Because Zoom fly from Stansted, but on a rather useless once-fortnightly service.

It wasn't the airline that used the 'original' "Canada 3000" was it? I remember they were going to operate 757s and onward connections from whichever Candian airport they operated to, included Saint Maarten.

Hope they will also fly to Berlin SXF (SXF because it is the low cost airport of Berlin :) )

If its ex Excel Airways that means it most probably belongs to Air Atlanta.

If this venture does go ahead, it will also allow people to connect to the major U.S Loco hubs - JetBlue at JFK and Southwest at Baltimore. Not directly though of course :p
