Another day at Stansted. As the airport is only 6 miles by road from where I live, I just jumped on my bike as usual and rode up there for a while. The planes were on RWY 23 so I went to my usual spot, just next to the airport fire training center which runs parallel to the runway (just about close enough to see some of the registrations without binoculars)

A couple of new ones including a Saudi 727 and a Saudi 737. Also an Onur Air and a BA ATP. Another new one for me is the Air Luxor Tristar, the only reason that this is in is because as it landed the other day, the pilot flared so sharply that he managed to hit the back of the tail engine on the ground, then slammed the front down so hard that one of the landing gear doors fell off, shutting down the airport for an hour as they searched the runway for loose parts!

In two hours I got a little over 60 registrations, around a movement every 2 minutes (because after an hour the ones departing I had already seen so they are not included).

I will list just here every aircraft that I saw so that people can see just how many of them are Easyjet or Ryanair, but compared to other days today was not too bad.

You bring back a lot of memories to me riding your bike to the Airport.
Back in the 50s and 60s i used to ride my bike to the airport and watch the DC6s and DC3s,Viscounts, Electras and if i was lucky enough the BOAC Comet

When I get my bike serviced it's going to be my method of choice for getting to all the GLA photo spots. I reckon by using the local cycle routes, I can get there in about the same time as using my car and of course with none of the parking issues.

I can remember the days when Stansted was a haven for great types. When I was a child we used to get BEA Argosies, Vanguards and sometimes Tridents. British Eagle and Monarch Britannias, Autair Ambassadors and the first of the Britannia Airways B737-200s all on crew training "circuits". There also used to be BOAC B707s, VC10s along with Ghana Airways VC10s, not forgetting the DC7Fs and CL44s of local carriers Transmeridian. Other local types were Channel Airways Tridents, Viscounts,BAC1-11s, Comet4Bs and HS748s and the Britannias and B707s of Lloyd International. Later during my time working at Stansted we regularly ramped 707s, DC8s of all versions, Caravelles, BAC1-11s, Fokker F28s and many others. Sadly now the scope of types and liveries has narrowed sharply...........a sign of the times I guess!! Geeez this is showing my age!!

Seems like you got a decent selection - do you take photos?

No I am hoping to get a digital camera sometime hopefully not too far in the future so that I can take photos. It is a shame as I have had quite good luck recently at Stansted when it comes to spotting, including lots of private jets, a couple of An-124's and even the An-22 (which appeared in airliner world quite recently). It would also be good to get a nice camera as I have made quite a lot of trips to airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow in the past couple of months, with lots of photo oppurtunities there.

Hopefully I will be able to share some photos on here soon!

Wow that sounds brilliant interflug, all those old plaes! The airport has certainly changed rapidly. When I first started to go up there only about 6 years ago, I can remember seeing Air Uk Shorts 360's and F100's, Ryanair 1-11's, European 1-11's, MK Airlines DC-8's and even a few private 707's. Eventhough it is more interesting now that the airport is a lot more busy and more destinations are being served (mainly by Ryanair), the 'quietness' did some times have an advantage because if you were lucky enough you would get to see aircraft doing touch and go's and if you were really lucky you could even see BA 747' doing them. Another aircraft I can remeber screaming over my head was the Ilyushin-76, but I think these are banned from the UK now.

Sorry mate.....My memory chip was working overtime! Yes we did get good "old" types then but as you say the airport is busier now. When I first started working at STN you could go 2 or 3 hrs without a movement on some days! But at weekends it would go nuts with SAS, Aviaco and Spantax DC9s,Scanair DC863s and A300s, Conair B720Bs and A300s, Sterling Caravelles and 727-200s, Linjeflyg F28s, Transwede Caravelles and MD80s, JAT DC9s/B727-200s and Aviogenex TU134As as well as TU154s of Balkan and Tarom as well as DC8-61s of Capitol Airlines, weekends would be very busy, even in winter. If we were really lucky Tarom would sometimes send an IL18! We used to be able to hitch a lift on some crew training circuits mainly with BA on 747s or L1011s or good old Air UK on SD330s and 360s. BA would sometimes station a 747 with us for a week or so and coach crews up from LHR and that was the time to "cosy up" to the training pilot who would stay in a local hotel and "book your ride". I guess it would'nt be allowed now. Would be nice to think of Virgin A380s doing circuits but I guess that a simulator will take care of that.

Yeah I wish that Air UK were still around. The Shorts 360's and Fokker 50's used to be good but even the Fokker 100's which were more common made a change. When it went over to KLM uk I thought that they may stil be around but they just disappeared. It then changed into Buzz, can you imagine a Fokker 100 in the Buzz scheme!

I think I'd rather see an F100 in Buzz colours than Ryanair. I always thought that the "blue tail" Air UK 100s looked smart though.

I think a F100 would look much better in Buzz cs than Ryanair, but then what doesn't. I think the Buzz cs were some of the best around (atleast the 146's are still in their bright cs). Saying that though, the Ryanair livery looked good on their old 1-11's.
