Hostage crisis at Mumbai airport:

A Central Industrial Security Force constable, Raj Namdev, on Saturday evening took hostage five of his women colleagues and shot dead his deputy commandant, Karandekar, at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai on Saturday.

Airport director Sudhir Kumar told rediff.com that the commandant was taken to the Nanavati Hospital. But he succumbed on the way, reports later said.

Airport sources told rediff.com that Karandekar had rejected the leave application of Namdev, following which there was an altercation at around 1830 IST.

The incident took place in the boarding area of Terminal 2C and the hostages have been held there.

Commandos have been summoned to disarm him and free the hostages.

The Press Trust of India quoted an unnamed official as saying that the constable's parents are being brought to the spot so that they can appeal to him to surrender.

All flights are normal and only the affected terminal has been cordoned off, Kumar said.
