No, it would be >39.000 ft,
and Scorpion is likely right, some bad translation probably.
the missile will require about five times the G capability of the target to complete a successful intercept.

The metric conversion gremlins inhabit the space between the journo's keyboard and the final product, whether paper or digital.

Agreed. A lot can happen between the writing of an article and it being published. I haven't had any issues with Craig Hoyle's style of journalism before.

I hope you aren't going to accuse him of secretly being Jackonicko now are you TooCool?

Stuff like this easily happens. We are all just humans and humans tend to make errors. Wouldn't be the first time that something like this happened, especially in the anglo-saxon press as the British and Americans are used to the imperial system, not the metric system in the first place.

    bitterness is most unbecoming.

Gripen was the best aircraft for Switzerland just as Rafale is the best aircraft for India

I've seen machine translations turn metres into feet & vice-versa.

    O no not again, nico
    normal proceedures:
    meet requirements>cheapest choice of them

Yes i want a Ferrari 599! but a Porsche Panamera really meets all my requirements and is cheaper and makes the rest of the family happy due to the four seats (ToT)! Do i buy a Ferrari anyway?

The SAF said it recommended the Rafale. So the Rafale was the best plane for the SAF. That the politicians couldn't or wouldn't afford it is another matter entirely. It doesn't mean the Gripen was the best plane for the SAF, unless you want to imply the SAF doesn't know what it needs.

Defense-aerospace reporting the same event says 12.000 meter
The various test flights took place mainly over the Baltic Sea, at an altitude between sea level and 12,000 meters. All test flights have been performed successfully.

Nic, try to understand. i would recomend ferrari to my family( and to the bank) but still it would not happen.

    Its not only AF choise.
-Both contenders meet all AF reqiurements (recommendation does not matter if not all other parameters dont differ)
    -Cheaper to fly
-Gripen suits ToT model better the Swiss business strategy
    -total contract value is lower

Military isn't exactly the brightest spot on the star either, but at least some of them have the sense to contract civilian analysts with ability to calculate cost effectiveness.
Curtis Lemay hired Mcnamara, and bomber Harris also hired a mathematician to find a more cost effective solution.

Apparently, so did the Swiss, eventually.

Do you base your claim on the report were Gripen was a downgraded with a factor of 0.6?

SAAB Signs memorandum of understanding with the Inter-American Development Bank

The defence and security company Saab and the Inter-American Development Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement will facilitate cooperation in projects where the Development Bank is offering finance to Latin American cities to support sustainable development.Saab and the Inter-American Development Bank will jointly investigate opportunities to cooperate in Saab’s project for attractive cities, and will consider whether the project has the potential to be carried forward within the framework of the Bank’s initiative to support the development of sustainable cities and safe environments in Latin America.

“Over the past decade, Latin America and the Caribbean has been one of the fastest-growing regions in the world,” says Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Inter-American Development Bank. “We have more than 500 cities with populations between 100,000 and two million people, and we need to make sure they develop in a way that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. We look forward to exploring areas of cooperation with Saab’s attractive cities project, which taps the company’s technology to contribute to sustainable urban environments in areas experiencing increased population and growth.”

Saab’s project for attractive cities is a long-term initiative with the target of developing existing expertise and technical products into a product portfolio of environmentally sustainable solutions that contribute to efficient, safe and sustainable urban environments.

“Saab views the cooperation with the Inter-American Development Bank very positively, and it fits well into Saab’s strategy to create global partnerships and networks for sustainable development,” says Dan Jangblad, Saab’s Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. “Saab is a technology company with large numbers of advanced products and solutions that are well-suited to meeting the challenges of the environmental field.”

Saab GreenTech is a business concept that aims to create and bring into use environmentally sustainable solutions in a variety of contexts where people impact on the environment. This could for example involve using situation pictures and sensor integration to manage and control traffic flows efficiently in order to avoid traffic jams and accidents.

He bases his claim on the fact that Gripen isn't made in France.

The consensus is that French collectively are more butt-hurt than others

Sometimes the French forget to do as they preach (i.e. the customer is king), but many had higher expectations about the Swiss decision process. In the end real politik won, so best of luck to the Gripen and let's move on.

Those last articles are quite interesting especially the last one. I don't know how they manage to seem that well informed, but if its true (which would explain the delay the first article reported as well), then all bets are still open...

it is extremly critical, would be a suprise that a fighter under development doesnt have all operational performance?

    @ obligatory

right now, it seems that it's the swiss air force that you should show that pic...

if the article from "Le Matin" says true, things may change soon (among other things, the commission that has to review the purchase seems to be almost unanimous (the one member that is supporting the deal "as is" is Ueli Maurer's friend - not necessarily the most objective member on the subject) about asking for another proposal.
