The Blitz Then & Now VOLUME 2

If anyone has The Blitz Then & Now Volume 2 (or equally useful reference) to hand, could you please do me a favour?

Please can you look to see what crashed on either 30Aug40 or 7Sep40 in the Ponders End (N. London) area.

We are expecting either an ME109 or ME110 around the Durants Park area.

    Huge thanks.

    Janie.

    Hope this helps.

Battle of Britain Then and Now.

    Friday august 30th.

    5/ZG 2

Messerschmitt Bf 110 D/O (3315). Shot down by Hurricane during escort mission and exploded attempting forced-landing at Durrants Road, Ponders End 4.55 pm. Hptmn. Schuldt and Uffz. Dyroff killed. Aircraft A2+HK a write off.

Just realised there is a photo of the crash site with this as part of the caption "The aircraft crashed into the greenhouses of Rochford's Nursery garden to the rear of No's 16 to 22 Durrants Road killing both crewmen."

Kev, you hero. I knew you'd be first. Bravo!

Does this mean that there were no crashes on 7Sep40 in that area?

Can you translate for me the following from your response?
    5/ZG 2
    D/O (3315)
    A2+HK

    Thanks again.

    Janie.

    Thank you.

5/ZG2 means 5th Staffel of Zerstorer Geschwader 2. D/O I don't know about and (3315) could be the aircraft werknummer or serial. A2+HK is how the individual aircraft letters appear on the fuselage. A2 then the black cross then HK.

Hope this helps. Will check Sept 7th now.

This is good stuff. Do let me know if there are any pictures.

My Mum thinks her house may be on a crash site. I can envisage a large hole appearing in the garden if this is the case.

    Janie.

    I now think D/O is the aircraft sub type such as P-51 C or P-51D. So I think it's a Messerschmitt Bf 110 D/O.

There are two pictures but don't know how I stand re copyright so if you send me your email address through private message I'll try and scan them and send them to you later.

Your mother lives on Durrant Road? Or am I getting confused?

"I can envisage a large hole appearing in the garden if this is the case."

Not half as big as the hole the 110 made.

Can't find anything likely for Sept 7th.

    Janie,

The Me110 D-0 is the pre-production long-range version with centrally mounted belly tank, which held 264 imp gal of fuel.

There are three different photos of the wreckage in my copy of 'Zerstorer'. One shows wreckage in a back garden with presumably the occupants of the house, and a good view of the back of the house. I can send you copies janie, if you PM me your email address.

If you're looking for a nice friendly aviation archaeology museum to come and have a look, let me know, & I'll get on to our curator.

Currently having scanner problems, don't know what's wrong. so if anyone has a copy of BoB then and now perhaps they could scan and send the August 7th Durrants Park images to Janie? I can probably get a photo of the crews grave/s. It is likely that they were interred together.

    Geoff.

I've not forgotten the other photo's you require from Cannock. I've lost the details due to pc problems so can you email them to me again please. I remember Lehner and Rothig. I'll make a concerted effort to get them done before your next deadline.

    PM coming your way.
It's been many years since I last went to the Shoreham museum. I will make the effort this year. What are you opening times?

    Janie.

Now you see what I mean about the size of the hole.

    Thanks Kev, Geoff & Dan!

All this has been forwarded to my mother. I cannot wait to see what her reaction is. If it is in any way entertaining, I will let you know.

    Janie.
