    Avro Lancaster NX611 How is it coming On?

    I wondered if there is any new news about NX611 return to flight/restoration as I have not heard anything lately.
    I take it no taxy runs this year?

    I think that her reassembly and repaint are currently underway - see here some recent pictures etc confirming this - https://en-gb.facebook.com/groups/NX611JustJane/

    I think that their plan is to recommence taxi rides once reassembly and repaint are completed, as this is one of their main funding streams. The return to flight restoration will remain ongoing and take a few more years to complete.

    There were rumours elsewhere that she was going into a temporary Tiger Force paint scheme: but that seems to have been squashed.

    I'm still surprised that she doesn't seem to have been further broken down into the separate sections etc, if this was the big pre-flight strip? Else, why repaint it now if that job remained for the future? It looks good in the primer, though there's no doped strips covering the fuselage joints etc..?

    It will take some years before she flies again.They have to do what they can each year but she has to be in one piece for each May so that she can do taxy runs to help pay for the restoration

    57 Sqn at EK was one of the assigned squadrons in 1945, don't know if any of their Lancs were painted as such though?

    I think the plan is to separate her to check the joins in the future!
    The plan is to have her in the air in 2020 I honk as all the work has to be done in the winter as the museum would lose revenue needed to restore her to flight!

    Yes, but it just seems odd not to have done it when she was in bare metal; I assume money/time are against them.

    From what was told to me when I visited. The strip was assess areas of skin for corrosion. The repaint is temporary paint that will be removed each winter. Then each winter period will concentrate on a certain area. 1 wing 1 year, the other the next, then the fuselage & so on. They were talking of a different temp paint scheme each year until its ready for final paint back in just Janes markings. There was hints that she might be finished white but alas that's not happened.

    Well, that's quite a different approach, but if it works for them and keeps the costs sensible each winter and keeps the airframe moving on the ground during the season, then good for them.

    I don't think it's all the paint that will come off every year I'm pretty sure I read that it will be stripped in just the areas that need work!

    When I was there I spoke to one of the engineers there. He said that it will take another 7 years before she is in the air. The plan was to assess the structure and see what needs to be made to replace the u/s parts. Each winter a section will be paint stripped and then repaired as required, then painted back. It is a long process but at least it will be made airworthy. Unless there is someone with some big $$ they want to throw at the project it is not going to happen overnight.

    Given NX611 history I would hope that for one season the temporary shceme choose would be French Aeronaval

    Thanks for the update, so we will not see it fly any time soon.
    great way of doing the restoration with it working all summer and restoration all winter

    I think it's a win win situation. The aircraft is available for taxi runs, gets a new livery regularly and it's condition improves every year with added bonus that in seven years time she is flyable. Fantastic.

    Presumably the CAA are involved now though, inspecting and signing off things as they are done..?

    Thank you all for your interest in NX611.
    This winters restoration work has progressed well and we are currently in the reassembly and repainted phase. There is a delay with the production of the paint but we should be back on track next week.
    Over the last 6 months we have disassembled the aircraft, paint stripped NX611 removing around 4 layers of paint, surveyed the entire airframe, removed all corrosion, repaired/replaced as many areas of damage as possible within the time period, primed, reassembled and now awaiting top coat paint. The CAA have been engaged with the project for several months and have visited to see the airframe during the strip down. They are very supportive of our team and project and we look forward to working closely with them over the coming years.
    This year should be taken as 'year 0' of the restoration project and puts a line in the sand establishing the current condition and producing the work packs for the restoration work required to complete the project.
    As noted above the work will be structured during the winter months to allow the aircraft to taxi during the summer and continue to be 'the beating heart' of the Centre. The plan is to focus on particular sections each winter restoring them to airworthy and reassembling the aircraft for each taxi season. This causes problems in one sense but ticks all the boxes required by the Panton family to keep the memory of Bomber Command alive year on year. It would be tragic if we took NX off line for 5 years and in pieces in the hangar. It would probably mean the end of the Centre and in turn the project to return NX to airworthy. If you want more detail into the project there will be an article in the next issue of Flypast and we have a club called the 'Rivet Club' which gives you weekly updates on our progress and is very enlightening as to the work completed.     Very striking images.

    It looks quite weird, not at all like a vintage bomber.
