Well if they couldn't at lunchtime they will know them all by tomorrow lunchtime - I can no longer get Planet Rock on my DAB but I suspect even they will have dusted off one or two by then. That said, I suspect that Radio 3 and Classic FM would have a little difficulty giving him context to their remit...

That's bit of a shock, being as young as he was.

Nope, not heard of her, unlike this great of yesteryear...

Choppers – the last surviving chimpanzee from the PG Tips adverts – has died aged 48.

Twycross Zoo said the remaining character from the “tea chimps” was put down by staff after she began to display signs of heart and liver failure.

Known for her performances as Ada in the PG Tips commercials, which ran from the 1960s through until 1980, Choppers became the last surviving member of the troop after her cohabitant at the zoo, Louis, died in 2014.

The chimpanzees also appeared in a number of children’s shows, including Tiswas and Blue Peter.

They were often dressed up in clothes and filmed acting out messy tea parties, with lip-syncing voice-overs recorded by the likes of actor Peter Sellers and comedian Bob Monkhouse.

While the commercials proved popular with TV audiences, Twycross Zoo ended its advertising agreement in the 1980s over concerns of animal cruelty.

Animal experts at the zoo later admitted the use of the apes was wrong, but chimpanzees from abroad continued to appear in tea adverts up until 2003.

Choppers was taken in by Twycross Zoo, Leicestershire, after being brought to Britain by a couple who had rescued her from poachers in Liberia.

Although she spent her twilight years in a shared enclosure with other chimps, she was known to prefer solitude, often shunning other apes in favour of human company.

A statement released by Twycross Zoo said staff and visitors had been “saddened” by Choppers’s death, adding that she was a “well-known” and “much-loved chimp”.

“Choppers recently became ill, showing signs of heart and liver failure, and despite the best efforts of the zoo’s veterinary team her health declined and the difficult decision to put her to sleep was made on Wednesday,” it continued.

“She will be sadly missed by all staff at the zoo, as well as her numerous fans.”

Choppers made her final TV performance in January last year, when she featured in a Channel 5 documentary looking back on the “tea chimps” and their lives in commercials.

A French actress, an old lady, an old cat, but not a panda, possibly.

Madeleine Lebeau, the French actress, who has died aged 92, was the last surviving cast member of Casablanca (1942); she is best known for her tearful but defiant singing of La Marseillaise and cry of “Vive La France!” in one of the film’s most memorable and moving scenes.

The world's oldest living person, 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones, died on Thursday in New York City, a research group said.

Jones' death makes Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, a 116-year-old woman in Italy, the oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

Scooter the Cat, who was named the world’s oldest living cat by the Guinness Book of World Records, has died at the age of 30.

TAIPEI (AFP) - Taipei Zoo was forced to deny reports that a giant panda gifted by China as a symbol of unity had died on Monday (May 16), in what initially appeared to be a frightening portent for cross-strait ties.

Tuan Tuan was one of two pandas given to the island in 2008 in a move seen to endorse the presidency of Beijing-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou. The animal's name means "reunion" and was interpreted as a reflection of China's ambition to reunite self-ruling Taiwan with the mainland.

But as Mr Ma prepares to step down and Taiwan ushers in new China-sceptic leader Tsai Ing-wen - intensely disliked by Beijing - reports circulated online that Tuan Tuan had died of distemper.

News of the death in Chinese media, including huanqiu.com and People's Daily, triggered laments on the mainland that Beijing's propaganda machine had failed.

"Tuan Tuan is dead. Propaganda is hopeless," said one post on People's Daily Twitter feed.

Others welcomed the news, with one post on Taiwan's Liberty Times website saying: "It's good... we don't have to spend so much money raising a Chinese panda."

As the story spread, Taipei Zoo insisted Tuan Tuan and his fellow pandas were very much alive.

"All three pandas are in good health," said zoo spokesman Eric Tsao.

Huanqiu.com later issued a correction and apology to the zoo and Internet users.

People's Daily also posted a correction via Twitter saying it had been "misinformed".

Some in Taiwan slammed the false reports - others joked China would have gone to war with Taiwan if the panda had actually died.

A semantic nit-pick perhaps, but surely you cannot report on the death of 'The world's oldest living person'? Does it not have to always be 'The world's oldest living person, at the time of their passing'? Surely the claim of oldest living person is automatically passed on the second the original claimant dies, and which global organisation recognises this accolade anyway?

I didn't know the Welsh band 'Man' had a keyboard player. I know of them as being pretty much the closest thing the UK got to a West Coast psychedelic band in the pattern of Quicksilver Messenger Service et al.

The ‘Queen of the Channel“, and the straight man to a talking horse...

Cindy Nicholas, one of the greats of marathon swimming who was once known as Queen of the Channel, has died from liver failure. She was 58.

The Toronto athlete, who became a lawyer and served as a Liberal member of the Ontario legislature from 1987 to 1990, was best known for her record-setting solo crossings of the English Channel in the 1970s and 1980s. Her daughter, Leahanne LeGrow, said Nicholas died Thursday.

In 1977, Nicholas became the first woman to complete a non-stop, two-way crossing of the 33-kilometre Channel. She finished in 19 hours 55 minutes, the quickest result at the time for any male or female swimmer.

Feel free to add people, or to comment on those who have died. Sometimes I see names that have a vaguely familiar ring to them and other times they pass me by completely - doing my routine now and he still doesn't come up, even a search on Google News using his name only brings up his comments on the passing of George Martin; in mitigation my app for The Guardian stopped working a few months ago and I haven't got around to sorting it out yet.

Anyway... A former heavy metal drummer, lately jazz musician.

NICK MENZA, DRUMMER for the influential metal band Megadeth, has died after collapsing on stage during a performance of his progressive jazz trio in Southern California, a family spokesman said this afternoon.

Sad to hear of the death of Tomita, made some brilliant music; the Ravel Album is well worth seeking out.
The item about Nick Mensa reminds me of a saxophonist of the 1950's called (IIRC) Allen Eager, who also collapsed and died on stage. He was playing a tune entitled 'From out of nowhere'.

You won't have heard of her, but you might have heard of her obituary...

NOLAND, Mary Anne Alfriend. Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, Mary Anne Noland of Richmond chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the age of 68...

Found an add-on for the above obit:

...Mary Anne Noland isn’t the first to send a final political message in an obituary this year. Jeffrey Cohen, a Pittsburgh man who died in January at the age of 70, requested in his obituary that loved ones not vote for Trump. “Jeffrey would ask that in lieu of flowers, please do not vote for Donald Trump,” it read.

Racing driver, stunt man, and possible Stig...

A world-renowned racing car driver who doubled for James Bond has died at the age of 52.

Neil Cunningham, who lived in Mumbles and raced motorcars in Le Mans, Silverstone, and numerous British GT Championships, had been battling with motor neurone disease (MND) for the past six years.

The dad-of-two also performed stunts in the BBC show Top Gear and was rumoured to be The Stig.
