    Thats fair enough.
Just keep in mind that Aviation reporters do use Russian sources as reference, when they do some research and produce an article. At least the good reporters like PiBu, Stefan Buttner, among others.

And i have other Russian sources, So far i can only find three Mi-29 AB

Anyway, looks like Kubinka AB was sold for $7Mill
    Thats dirt cheap.

    http://lands-sale.com/rubric/ab_russia/344

Its a little sad, seeing an historical AB like Kubinka fade away.. and if its sad for me, imgaine all the people whom worked and lived there.
This should be a reminder to all the western countries whom whine about the current cuts in their Air forces.
Things are not any better in VVS. Some 20 Airbases have been or in the making of beeing laid down and sold on the civilian market..
For some it means no more work, other would have to move in order to keep their work.

I've just completed a rather thorough survey of whatever is visible on GE imagery, all across Russia. I used the airbase list available on scramble.nl. Where there were no images available, I assumed scramble.nl is correct and added what they said.

It is important to say that this is only circumstancial evidence and certainly no proof of number of squadrons. That said, GE has gotten better over the last years. I had images of something like 95% of the airbases from the list, and on average there were 3-4 images per airbase, ranging from first half of 2000s to 2011. A lot of the bases had images from 2011. There were airbases with close to 10 different images, giving pretty good idea what was going on there over time.

where images from various years remained the same (sometimes the formations of planes didnt move for years) and where there were available other on-site images clearly showing conserved planes - i assumed that lot is not active.

Of course some bases could have been closed since the image was taken. Some mayve been reopened. Some squadrons mayve been temporarely relocated. One cant take all that into account. But knowing an airplane sits on the ground some 97% of the daytime period throughout the year, chances are most of the info is pretty solid.

All that being said - here is another take on fairly current state of the VVS. Info of course isnt quite current, i would say the average dates range from 2010 to 2011.

    mig29 - 6 squadrons
    mig31 - 10 squdrons
    su24 (and su24mr) - 8-9 squadrons
    su25 - 5-6 squadrons
    su27 - 7-9 squadrons
    su33 - 1 squadron

With some bases i wasnt sure if the planes were active or stored, that is why there is a range of number of squadrons.

Also, it seems that regular squadron is 24 planes, for most. However, mig31s seem to come in squadrons of 16. Also, some mig29 bases seem to be squads of 16. (maybe the algerian SMTs?)

The former Air Regiments consisted of 24 units.
Now VVS use Sq size. Exactly how many in each Sq will differ.
16 on average could be the case.
But i find it strange if one Sq has 24 units.. it could mean two Sq.

One typical Flanker Sq size at Krymsk AB is 12 Su-27SM3 + 2 Su-30M2.
    Imo 14 units.

First off i dont trust people who dont even write Su and MiG correctly. Secondly, you are using wildly inaccurate method.

Krymsk doesn't have 12 SM3's. All squadrons should be 12, or maybe very few ones a bit less.

haavarla, i certainly did find a fair number of airbases with 16 planes per type, they were mostly mig31s, but like i said some mig29s and even, now that i think of it, a few su27s. even some bases that had over 16 planes could be assumed to actually be bases with 2 squadrons of 12 or 16, as it is hard to know precisely if all planes are conserved or active, or managed to be off-image at the moment they were taken.

Also, like i mentioned, even though most images were 2010-2011, some were older, perhaps before the reorganization.

It would be really nice if we could come up with current, 2012 line up of squadrons. How did you come up with the list you wrote here?

I would think that using photographs of individual planes could help quite a bit compling a better sense of RuAF. If only someone would explain to me the serials, the numbering system. I do hope that every squadron can be differentiated from other squadrons by the serial numbers...

As a general rule, yes a Sq should be 12.
But there are numerous sources that Russian units does not have nice round figures like 12, 24 or 36..

Russian squadrons of fighter size aircraft have ~12 ac nominal , but they can vary from 8 to 16 ac sometimes. The Russians stick to the British style of smaller size squadrons for a higher number of that.

There is a nice article in newest AvV. I spotted several errors in the text, but the article has tables of VVS, VMF, MVD, MChS and FSB aviation and airbases. I could scan if anyone is interested. *All* in Russian tho, but it is not hard to learn Russian alphabet...

It seems that more and more planes are getting R********* serials painted on their tails, not only new builds and modernized planes but repainted planes as well. How realistic would be to start a database and collecting images of all planes with different serials?

    thank you, Berkut!

I know what follows is horrible translation, as i ran it through text recognition and google translate, but it's best I can do right now:

Soon, despite the fact that a number of air bases are not yet fully

All created Av B became part of the permanent combat readiness,
that increased requirements for serviceability of the fleet, and
as the level of training of flight personnel. Continues to improve
and funding. As a result, in 2011 the average annual
raid on one pilot was 90 hours in 2012, it is planned
increased to 130, and in the future, up to 200-220 hours. In

Now i am sure there are errors there, due to text recognition. But even without that, it would be nice if we could edit the list to make it more detailed. Like which regiments are combat regiments, which are training regiments, etc.

There are errors here.. to be blunt, this list is a mess.

But thx anyway, i can now put the different AB in each Air Group like this:

    6972nd Air Group:
    AB Krymsk Su27/27UB , Mi-8/24 / 28N Ka-27
    AB Bvriennovsk Su-25 / 25UB725SM Mi-24 Mi-8 Mi-28N
    AB Maninovka Cv-24MP
    AB Millerovo MiG-29 MiG-29UB
    AB M of nozavek CV-24 Cv-24MP
    AB Primorsko-Ahtaosk Su-25
    AB Rostov-on-donv An-12 Antonov An-26 L-410

This show that Krymsk AB is the Hq of 6972nd Air Group.

    This is not Correct..

    7000AvB Vononezh Su-24M AN-30 Mi-8 Mi - 9?
    AG Bessovets Su27, Su27UB, Su27sm
    AG Kvnck MiG-29 SMT MiG-29UB
    AG Levashov Tu-134 Antonov An-26 Antonov An-12 Mi-8 Il-22M
    AG Monchegonsk Su-24M / 24MR Mi-24 Mi-8 Mi-9 MiG-25
    AG Khotilovo MiG-31 Su-27?
    AG Cheonyahovsk Su-24M
    AG Kaliningrad Su27 Su27UB

The Correct should be 6963rd Air Group
Which Kursk AB is HQ --MiG-29 SMT MiG-29UB..

    http://www.16va.be/19_gviap_eng_part3.html

Perhaps they axed a few Air Groups from their AF inventory?
I cant seems to locate the 6963rd Air Group..

Or the 6959th Air Group, HQ based at Olenya AB..

Or the 6968th Air Group, HQ based at Khotilovo AB..

And then we have Kubinka AB..??
I thought this AB was disolved and moved/merged at LIPETSK AB..

But hey! If this is a brand new updated inventory list, then thing could have changed last time i heard. Its possible they have moved/mixed and restructured Air Groups and AB..

I tried checking the bases with fighters on GE but so far it's proving to be a tough business as the word recognition butchered those base names and half the time I can't even understand which base is supposed to be which.

I recommend to learn Russian Alphabet. Friend of mine learned it in a matter of week or two prior to our Moscow trip, it is not as hard as you might think.

Well i know enough of the Russian Alphabet, to get around.

But it looks to me that the list is eighter incomplete or incorrect..

However it does give us some idea how the RuAF AB structure looks like.
    Thanks
