Akash SAM tested against 2 flying targets

Demonstrating multiple-target handling capability, two Akash surface-to-air supersonic missiles were simultaneously launched against two flying targets by Indian Air Force personnel from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha on Thursday.

Flying at supersonic speed of 2.5 Mach, one of the missiles engaged and destroyed a fast-moving Banshee, a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), at a slant range of 11 km and an altitude of 2.5 km.

Carrying a 55 kg pre-fragmented warhead, the missile achieved a direct hit against the target which was in an approaching mode, according to G. Chandramouli, Project Director, Akash weapon system.

As the second missile approached the other target (para flares dropped from a MIG 27) at a slant range of 24 km and an altitude of 5.5. km, the warhead detonated within the proximity of the target which was receding. He said multiple target handling and automated air defence functions were the important features of the indigenously developed Akash missile system.

    From Dr Saraswat's presentation
    - Astra can do 60g maneuvers.
    - If Brahmos is flown at an altitude of 18 Kms without the low altitude maneuvering, the range can be as high as 600 Km (and yes, they are going to do an 'exercise' in that aspect).
    - There are two production lines for Brahmos, one in Kerala and other in Hyderabad.
    - AAD interceptor has 15 to 35g maneuver capability, and hence can take subsonic cruise missiles out with ease. System analysis shows that Brahmos level threats can be apprehended using AAD in cruise missile defence.
    - CMD will require IIR seekers and automatic target recognition capabilities.
    - The range of LFRJ cruise missile will be 600-1000 km, the problem lies with high density fuel.

DRDO's 100 km ranged 1000 kg glide bomb tested successfully. It's supposed to have a terminal seeker.

So the smart bomb with system on chip, INS and terminal seeker has now been unveiled.

A 1000 kg glide bomb designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was successfully tested today, in Bay of Bengal of the coast of Odisha. The bomb was dropped by an Indian Air force aircraft, The bomb, guided by its ‘on board navigation system’ glided for nearly 100 km before hitting the target with great precision. The flight of the glide bomb was monitored by radars and electro-optic systems stationed at Integrated Test Range (ITR).

    Fom MoD year end statement:-
    - Astra is already in user trials.
    - HeliNa is integrated with Rudra
    - The definitive engine for Nirbhay is called Manik (Ruby), rated at 450 Kgf, currently undergoing endurance tests.

Reading between the lines, DRDO's 'Year Gone By' would appear to support the contention that the recent Nirbhay test used a Russian rather than indigenous turbojet:

Nirbhay, the 1000-km class long range sub-sonic cruise missile was successfully flight tested on the 17th October 2014. The flight lasted for over one hour and met all the mission objectives with missile following the predefined trajectory with very high accuracy throughout its path.

    [....]

An expendable 450 Kgf thrust class Gas Turbine engine ‘Manik’ was developed for 1000 km class subsonic cruise missile [Nirbhay] and is undergoing endurance tests.
Lots of interesting stuff in this document.

It is. The Indian engine is also said to have roots in the Russian one.

Air launched Brahmos to be tested from a Su-30MKI in March

    link to article

BALASORE:The much-awaited test of the air version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos will be conducted in March.

    ..
Informing this over phone from Delhi, Mishra said, “If everything goes according to the programme, the live test flight of the missile will be carried out from Su-30MKI fighter aircraft in March. Both the launcher and missile are ready. Now, interface of the missile with the aircraft is on. There will be a dummy test before the actual drop test,” he said.

    ..
Defence sources said the BrahMos Aerospace had to reduce the weight of the air version of the missile as it will be launched from a moving platform. Some modifications were also made in its design to easily integrate it in Sukhoi aircraft.

“Some structural changes were also made to the Sukhoi by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to ensure finest integration. The design changes have been validated through various tests, including the critical ground vibration test,” sources added.
Sources said the drop test is likely to be conducted off the Odisha coast while the dummy test will take place in Pokharan.

Provides a nice overview of active missile programs, amongst other things.

Also the 'liquid paint' rendition of the Indian tricolour at the start of the clip is awesome. Don't suppose anyone has a clean version of it, i.e. minus the DRDO label?

India begins development of air launched Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile for Su-30MKI

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) of the Ministry of Defence of India started work on developing an air-launched version of the Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile to arm the Su-30MKI. According to TASS, the press service of the organization announced that – “the launch from an aircraft will take place in March-April of this year”.

According to the missile’s creators, now they are working on integrating it with the fighter jet’s systems and developing the capability of launching from low altitudes, in order to minimize its visibility to radar.

At DRDO, they noted that the Nirbhay missile can use the Su-30MKI’s existing pylons that now carry the Brahmos missile. In the future, they are also considering using the Nirbhay missile to arm the light Indian fighter jets – the Tejas, but for this, the rocket will need to be “shortened” by about 25%.

The development of the Nirbhay began in 2007. According to experts, the missile has a high degree of accuracy and a range of up to 1,500 kilometers. Until now, only two test firings from the ground have been carried out.

    ..
clearly there isn't going to be any launch in April-May this year..don't know what they were thinking when they reported this.

A new mystery missile is under development. High energy, long ranged, solid fuel ramjet propulsion.

This is separate from liquid fueled ramjet cruise missile.
